a knock resounded through ha nah's room. "wash up and come get your breakfast," a familiar voice knocked her out of dreamland.

as soon as she stepped foot into the dining area, she was greeted with fresh croissants and her favourite lemon tart. "what's with the feast? it's only breakfast," she raised her eyebrows and exchanged eye contact with her brother. "eat up. we're going to visit them today."

the sunken look her brother, ha myung, carried was sufficient for ha nah to read the room. "you eat up too. i'll get ready quick." she sat herself down and took a few bites of her tart, gradually losing appetite. she finished her tart and one croissant, keeping in mind her brother's effort to put up a nice breakfast for them to enjoy before they had to face something they always pushed away.

"i'm ready to leave." ha nah slid both her arms through her black coat, hands in pocket as she waited for her brother to grab his car keys at the doorstep. the clouds were slightly greyer than usual. do they know?

"let's go." and before they knew it, ha myung finished parking the car. both of them took a deep breath, as if reassuring themselves that the world is safe even if they step outside. with trembling hearts, they stepped foot onto the path leading them to the graves of their parents.

just three years ago, the siblings lost them to a fatal car accident. they were just returning from work, and mom had promised to cook up their favourite meal. what could go wrong? the scene was absolutely horrifying to watch as they waited outside the operating theatre, awaiting good news only to be greeted with none. car flipped, shattered glass, woman lying right next to the car, man strapped to his seat. what were the chances of survival?

three whole years, and they were not ready to let them go just yet. the first year was unbearable for the duo--skipping meals and classes, uncontrollable tears, hearts getting ripped apart. everything they saw and touched reminded them of their two loving parents. the second year arrived and they tried to move on. they really did. but losing both of their closed ones made such an impact that they struggled to live on, as their emotions tucked right at the back of their minds, trying to help each other get through it. ha myung was the older one and knew he had to pick himself up so he could continue supporting and protecting his only kin left.

both of them bowed as they were faced with two slabs of stone, parents' names engraved on it. "we miss you. a lot, actually." ha nah started, forcing a fond smile as she grips onto her coat, heart clenching. "how are the both of you up there?" ha myung continued.

a lone tear rolled off his face, but he wiped it away instantly, staying strong and positive, so he could be ha nah's support pillar. he knew how hard this incident had hit her, and he could see through that facade of hers that she puts up every time a relative asks if they're doing well on their own. they were both staying strong for each other, yet crumbling bit by bit on the inside.

"i'm in university now. assignments have been tough but i'm working hard to get through them. that runs in the ki family right?" at this point, she was already feeling the knot form in her throat. ha nah most definitely did not want to break down. it's been three years, silly. move on for the sake of everyone.

the day flew by as the both of them finished chatting to each other, or to one another as a family, if we put it that way. the sky was getting darker by the minute which signalled that it was their time to leave. "i'll be back again. i promise." they bid their goodbyes as they retreat back to the car. "that was nice." she faced ha myung, the corners of her lips slightly rising. "i know. you did great today."

they returned home, hearts full but also empty. when i meet them, i'm going to greet them with my happiest smile and wide arms.
