i might have a concussion or two, but i'm alright

R I L E Y ;

It was a Friday. I loved Fridays.

It was a minimum day at school, and then afterwards I get to change in to comfy sweats and a sweatshirt with fuzzy socks, then I got to eat all the junk food I want with no one to judge me, except for my cat.

I was at my locker, reaching for my history textbook while listening to Maya rant about how this boy in her class kept picking his boogers.

"It was so gross! He stuck his bony finger in his nostril and once he got the booger he observed it, then sniffed it? Then afterwards, he had the nerve to laugh and show it at me? What the heck?" Maya was leaning across the other lockers, her binder in one of her hands.

"That sounds very childish and very gro–" My eyes flickered up and I paused. There was Charlie Gardener, looking as gorgeous as ever with Lucas and Missy by his side. The golden trio.

Lucas and Missy were holding hands, – I grimaced at the sight of them acting all lovey dovey, and Charlie was grinning at everyone and waving hi. He was your average cute teenage boy next door: smart, charming, and handsome.

He caught me staring and I blushed, he gave me a smile, and I was still on my tippy toes reaching for my history text book when I felt a sharp pain in my face and found myself on the ground.

"Holy shit! Are you okay?" Maya asked, scrambling to help me up.

"Yes, totally, a huge textbook fell on me and my crush is staring at me, totally okay, yup, in alright. I might have a concussion or two, but I'm alright."

The whole hallway bursted out in laughter and I had the urge to flip off everyone but managed not to.

Charlie glanced at me wide eyed, Missy was too busy laughing her ass off, and Lucas ran over to help me off. How sweet.

"You just manage to get yourself in quite a pickle, huh nerd?" Lucas asked me as he helped me up along with Maya.

"I'm such a klutz, it makes me want to throw myself in the trash can and hope no one ever sees me again. Talk about public humiliation. Can you see anything?" I turned to face Maya and Lucas, both looked at each other, and at the same time responded,

"No." Total lie.

I looked over at the mirror that was plastered on my locker and noticed a red bump starting to form. I groaned loudly and slammed my locker door shut.

"Oh poor honey, you look even worse than you already were." Missy walked over to Lucas and linked arms with him, pretending to make a sad face at me.

I was about to punch Missy right in the face but Maya held me back.

"Well at least her injury is fixable with makeup, however your face and personality can't even be fixed with plastic surgery." Maya said coolly and dragged me away to the bathroom. That was also a lie. Missy was really gorgeous – as much as I hated to admit it. Her personality and her inside might be as ugly as a monkeys butt but on the outside, she was hella gorgeous.

"Alright Matthews, let's fix you up so it looks like an elephant didn't run over you." Maya stated and began to use her makeup to conceal the big red bump on my forehead.

So far Friday wasn't the best for me.

I received an A- on my Biology homework, managed to forget to bring my lunch to school, and was humiliated in front of my crush. Not so great.

Here I was, staring at the ceiling, laying on my bed. I was still utterly embarrassed from what happened. I glanced at the phone on my bedside table and immediately went to call Maya.

After a few rings, she finally decided to answer.

"Hey, peaches."

I let out a loud groan that sounded like a dying whale. "Yeah, hi."

"Still thinking about what happened during your lovely way of letting Charlie Gardener know you exist?"

"Not the time for your sarcasm." Maya let out a snicker and I could imagine her rolling her eyes.

"It's just, I'm such a klutz! I manage to trip over anything, plus there's bruises on my leg and I don't even know where they came from! And there's still a mark on my forehead, and no, not the cool one like Harry Potter's scar." I rambled on and on until she paused me.

"Alright Riley, breathe. Inhale then exhale. Count to ten. Breathe." Maya instructed me and after about five minutes, I had calmed down.

"Although you have to admit, it was kind of funny seeing his reaction. He looked like a fish. Good times, good times." Maya laughed and I glared at my phone.

"Riley!" My mom shouted from downstairs.

"I get it, you love to see me be clumsy in front of my crush, but I have to blast. My mom is calling me. Talk to you later. Yeah. Bye!" I hung up and hurriedly put on my fuzzy socks and rushed down the hard wood stairs. Rookie mistake.

My fuzzy socks made the floor seem slippery and before I knew it, my face was on the ground.

"Oh my god! Are you okay?" My mom's voice became clear as she helped me up.

Auggie's laughter was loud and obnoxious. "How did you manage to fall? This is why you don't play any sports. Thanks Riles, I needed it that." He let out a content sigh and wiped off his invisible sweat from his forehead.

I squinted my eyes and let out another groan that sounded like I was dying.

"Just leave me here to die and rot." I told my mother and put my arm over my eyes.

"I mean if you say so, but we'll have to get rid of you after. We don't want to attract flies and make the house smell."

"That's fine with me." I made a weird noise and peeked a look at my mom.

"Get up, I'll make you hot chocolate."

"You're the best and I love you!" I told her as she lifted me up.

"I know sweetie, I know." And that was my mother, Topanga Matthews.
