Chapter 4

Dark paced around the cave. It had been three days since Snow had been kidnapped by a Wild. He narrowed his eyes in frustration. If only Beta Black had chosen him to go along with the others, he could have saved her! He could have stopped whoever had so easily taken her from running off! And that was another thing. Snow had been easily taken. She was the most difficult shifter Dark knew, she must have been threatened for her to allow this to happen.

Dark growled to himself. Snow was his best friend, they had grown up together when they were pups. Both of their fathers had been killed in a surprise attack from the Wilds in the cave, and after that they had bonded well and took comfort in each other. He let out a sigh of frustration. Why had Black told them to split up?! He lifted his head at the sound of wings in the tunnel leading to the cave and looked up to see another search party returning. His eyes glimmered with hope as the birds shifted into wolves, but as he saw the looks of grief on their faces he knew they, too, had failed in their quest.

He walked over to the group and asked a question he already knew the answer to, but he had to be sure. "Any signs of her?" The head of the group, Fern, gave him a look of pity and replied, "I'm sorry, Dark, we lost her scent after we crossed the river." He nodded to the senior shifter and dragged his paws over to his den in the cavern, where he lay down and rested his head on his paws, staring down the tunnel and out at the evening sky, his eyes once again alight with hope as he watched the moon slowly rise and drifted off to sleep.

He was going to find her no matter what.

. . .

I felt Ray jump up beside me as I, too, was jolted back into reality and my body jumped up without my permission. My ears were back and a slight growl was coming from my throat. I glared at the new shifter in form of a black bear and was barely aware of Ray doing the same. The bear just stared at Ray in shock, and after a while its gaze slowly turned on me. I growled louder, an obvious warning, and in response the black bear took a few steps back, crouching closer to the ground. Apparently some of my Alpha power had seeped into my warning without me being aware of it. I really needed to learn to control that.

Ray glanced at me and gave me a soothing look. I instantly calmed down and stopped growling. Hmm, weird. The gorgeous wolf walked over to the bear and whispered words I couldn't hear to it. His words seemed to work because moments later the bear had turned around and run off. Something in the back of my mind told me it might be a trap, but I ignored it and stared at Ray as he trotted back over to me. "So, where were we? Something about me being big, handsome, and incredibly attracted to you?" he said. "I never said anything about..." I began to say that I hadn't said anything about him being attracted to me when I realized what he was saying. I felt my heart speed up, and if it's possible for a wolf to blush, I did.

I looked back into his eyes and felt the intensity of his gaze. I could see many mixed emotions in his eyes: love, want, a little cockiness, and.... I couldn't tell what else his gaze was directing at me, but I knew that many of the same emotions could be seen in my eyes. I felt a slight thorn wedging its way into my heart. I knew we couldn't be together, but still I was beginning to have feelings for this shifter I didn't even know.

. . .

(Ray's POV)

I jumped up at the sound of the shout, fully alert once more. How could I have let my gaurd down so easily? This shifter was messing with my head. I whipped around to see that the one who had shouted was Fang. He was in black bear form and was staring at me in shock, and maybe a little horror. I noticed that the shifter next to me (I still don't know her name, I should really find out) was growling at him. I gave her a soothing glance and she instantly calmed down. Wow I wasn't expecting that to work.

Sighing inwardly, I walked over to Fang. Leaning down, I whispered to him. "Go back to the clearing. You never saw us, you don't know where I am or what's going on. Got it?" He nodded his head and spun around, then ran back the way he had come. I turned and walked back over the the she-wolf. Her gorgeous white fur was glistening in the moon light and I couldn't help but stare. Say something! Don't just stand there like an idiot, my brain told me. Before I could stop it, words were pouring out my mouth. "So, where were we? Something about me being big, handsome, and incredibly attracted to you?" Did I really just say that last part out loud?!

"I never said anything about..." she trailed off, suddenly realizing what I had just said. Heck, I was still realizing what I'd just said! She looked down at her paws for a few moments, embarrassed, and I couldn't help but stare at her again. She looked back up and our eyes locked. My breath caught in my throat. Her eyes were a swirl of blues and greens, and slight flecks of silver. I was becoming mesmerized by her eyes when I suddenly shook my head. How could a Pack female stir up these emotions inside of me when I didn't even know her name?

Sorry I think this chapter is really short (I know all of them kind of are), but I was trying to introduce a few things, please don't hate me! Anyways, comment, vote, friend me, anything you feel like! (But if you leave a comment please don't be hateful!)
