Chapter 5

Alpha Night sat on one of the high ridges of the mountain, watching the morning sun rise. It was now the fourth day since her daughter had been kidnapped, and they had still found nothing! How could someone take her so easily without leaving any trace? How had they taken Snow in the first place? Knowing Snow, she would resist with all her might, unless... Alpha Night shook her head. Those thoughts were useless, all that mattered was finding her only blood relative. She feared the worst, and a creeping feeling was growing inside of her.

What if a Wild had taken her hostage to get more territory? Or maybe they were going to pick the Pack off one by one until none remained. Or maybe they wanted something else.... But what?

The Alpha took a deep breath, knowing what they had to do. She really hated this idea, but it had to be done for the sake of her daughter and the Pack. Without her heir, she would have to choose a new Alpha to replace her, but she was determined not to let that happen. Standing up, Alpha Night leaped swiftly out over the mountain and transformed into a beautiful black hawk. She turned north and headed back towards the cave.

"Everyone listen up! I've come to a very tough decision. As you all know, Snow is my only daughter, and the next in line to become Alpha. As we know, the Wilds have taken her, and I will not stand for this. I think you all know what I am going to say, but in case you don't, here it is: I am sending a team to go to the Wild's camp." Alpha Night said, scanning the faces around her as she heard a few gasps, but most gave her serious looks and she knew they agreed. "Now, you do not have to go if you don't want to. I will lead this mission, and while we are away Beta Black will be staying behind. He is in charge and I expect you all to listen to him. Who would like to go on this paramount mission?"

The Alpha stood tall, waiting for those who wanted to follow her to step forward. Nearly half of the Shifters stepped forward, about fifteen. That would do. She nodded at them. "Eat and rest, we leave when the sun rises to it's highest point."

 . . .

I sighed as I looked just below the sun, it was nearly noon. I really needed to leave. Slowly, I stood up and scanned the area around me. Ray had gone out hunting. We had stayed the night again in the same place as the night before, and it broke my heart to think of leaving him. How could this Wild evoke this in me when I had just met him a few days before? He didn't even know my name, for crying out loud!

Shuffling, along with the steady pad of paws behind me signaled Ray's return. Just my luck, he had to come back when I was about to leave! My stomach growled as I smelled the fresh prey he had caught. I turned towards him and he walked over. Stopping next to me, he dropped a large buck. I looked at him in amazement. He had caught a full grown buck, just slightly smaller than himself, and had dragged it all the way back here.

"Hungry?" he asked, his eyes shining with pride. I nodded quickly and settled down next to the deer.

We ate in silence, listening to the forest around us. Robins singing and woodpeckers hammering against rough tree bark then pausing. Peck, peck, peck, peck, peck.... Peck, peck, peck, peck, peck. The gurgling of a small stream, the soothing sound of water over stones. It all was so peaceful.

I swiped my tongue around my mouth, yawned, then stretched lazily. I spread out on the grass and watched a squirrel hop from tree to tree. I never got opportunities to relax like this back home. I wondered, not for the first time, what was going on in the Pack. They were probably searching for me worriedly, my mother stressing over keeping everyone in control, while also finding her own time to worry. I cringed at the thought. My mother never worried.

Looking over at Ray, I frowned and wondered how I could manage to get away and go home. That was another thing. I didn't know how to get home! I had no idea where I was, so trying to go home was futile.

I was about to say something to Ray, who was looking at me by now, when I heard a low growling coming from the trees. My head snapped in that direction and I saw several sets of eyes staring at us from the bushes. How had I not heard them?!

Ray jumped up, hackles raised, which caused the growl to grow louder. More voices joined in, and I realized we were surrounded, by the sound of it. My heart raced with fear. This was going to be bad.
