"No."
Nick blinked, and closed the box, his shoulders slumping as his face crumpled. "Oh."
I reached out and grabbed his hands, "I'm so sorry Nick."
He focused on our hands, then stood back up, sitting across from me, "I... Uhm... We should go."
I hid in my hands as he paid the check and nearly burst into tears when he gave me his jacket once we got outside to wait for the limo.
"Nick." I whispered, reaching for his hand.
"It's fine." He said back, his voice hollow, rejecting my touch as he put his hand in his poket, "I just need a minute."
I closed my eyes, "I'm so sorry."
He just nodded, not bothering to force a smile as the limo pulled up. He opened the door for me and I slid in all the way down, watching as he sat down right at the door, rubbing his eyes with his thumb and forefinger. I bit my lip and this time the tears did fall, darkening my dress where they hit. I held my hands to my face in a prayer position, not wanting to even look at Nick's face but at the same time not being able to look away. He looked crushed, staring out the window and I could've sworn I saw tear tracks on his face. Neither of us spoke, the tension in the limo said enough.
We got home and we didn't touch as we walked up the steps, neither of us wanting to talk. Nick opened the door for me and as soon as we both were inside-
"SUUURPRISEEEEEEE!"
I yelped and grabbed Nick's arm, my jaw dropping as all of our closest friends and family flocked around us.
"LET ME SEE THE RING!" Marissa yelled, running to my side and grabbing my hand. When she saw it was empty she looked up at me, finally noticing the tears in my eyes, "Oh my God." She whispered, bringing her hand to her mouth, "You said no?"
The crowd went silent and I took a ragged breath, "I'm sorry but the party is over."
I ran past everyone, lobbing my heels into the kitchen. I took the stairs two at a time and kept running until I reached the bedroom, throwing myself face first into the pillows as I finally let the sobs rip through my chest. I must've been crying for twenty minutes until I got up and changed into one of Nick's sweatshirts, wiping my face free of makeup and tears and tying my hair back before finally returning to bed. Eventually, footsteps reached my ears and the door opened. It must've been Nick. I heard him getting ready for bed and then finally felt it dip as he got in, laying on his back before taking a deep breath.
"Your mom took Mac back to her house."
I just nodded, closing my eyes as more tears came, "Good."
He sighed deeply, "Goodnight."
I bit my lip, "Goodnight."
Nick rolled onto his side, facing me. It was a long time until he spoke again, and I knew he thought I was asleep, "I love you."

When I woke up the next morning, the bed was empty and I heard noise coming from the kitchen. I stood up and pulled on shorts, which happened to be Nick's boxers, then walked downstairs.
"Dada you're not supposed to do it like that!" I heard Mac squeal.
"Then help me babe! Show me how!"
"Do it like mommy does it!" She whined, "Pweeaasee!"
I walked in and smiled at back, "Do what like I do?"
She gleefully smiled up at me, "Dada can't cut pancakes like you. You gotta do then the circles!"
I smiled and took the knife from Nick, cutting her pancakes the way I had done when I first adopted her, in a spiral, then cutting around it. Mac loved it, but Nick didn't get it. She now refused to eat pancakes any other way.
"How many pancakes do you want?" I heard Nick murmur, and looked up at him, glancing away quickly at the pain in his eyes.
"Two is fine."
Suddenly Mac kicked her feet and pointed her fork accusingly at Nick, "You didn't tell momma good morning or that or love you or give her kisses!"
Nick sighed and smiled at me, "Goodmorning, love." I bit my lip as Mac cleared her throat and Nick leaned over, kissing my lightly. "I love you."
I wanted to burst into tears and throwing my arms around his neck and tell him I would marry him but I just smiled, "I love you too."
We ate breakfast, then Mac went off to change into her day clothes while I went upstairs with Nick to change as well.
"So what are you doing today?" Nick said lightly, pulling a shirt over his head.
"I was just gonna hang around here... You?"
He took a deep breath, "Same I guess."
I closed my eyes and leaned against the wall once he walked out. I hated this, I hated not being able to talk to him and being awkward and tense. This isn't us, this isn't our relationship. All I wanted to do was forget last night ever happened.
~*~
"Mommy why is Dada sad?"
I looked up, "What?"
Mac sipped her lemonade, "Why is Dada sad?"
I sighed, "He's sad because I told him no to a very important question."
"What question was it?"
I bit my lip, "Dada asked me to marry him. It means that we spend the rest of our lives together."
Her brow furrowed, "You don't wanna do that with Dada?"
I sighed, "No I do. It's just complicated."
She furrowed her brow, clearly confused, "What would change if you married him?"
I shrugged and searched for an answer, "Nothing really. Dada and I would buy a new house, and we would live together."
Mac interrupted, "But Dada does live here."
I bit my lip, "I know but it would be different. We would start to talk about babies and having kids-"
"But you have me!"
I smiled and kissed her head, "That's right, we do have you. But it's just a little different sweetie."
She frowned, "I think differents are stupid. You should marry Dada."
I raised an eyebrow, "And why is that?"
"Because you love Dada and Dada loves you."
I chuckled at her logic, "Maybe one day babe, maybe one day."
