"Q! Hey Q how many times have I told you to get your butt down here!"

I opened my eyes as I hear my dad yelling at me from the store downstairs. I looked at my watch. I jumped off of my spot on the couch and ran down the stairs, slipping my Max shirt on over top of my green long sleeve as I go.

My dad was behind the cash register doing my job. He had a suit on with a small name tag taped to it. He ran a hand through his white hair and sighed in relief when he saw me.

"Sorry." I shouted as I grabbed an energy drink from the back of the store. "I over slept."

I heard my dad snort. "For six hours?" I walked up to him. He shook his head as I was about to defend myself. "Never mind. It doesn't matter. I had to be gone an hour ago. Come here."

I stood behind the counter as he ripped off his name tag. He threw on a vest and tried to straighten his hair. "Keep this place in order for me eh? I'll be back in a couple days. Remember, guns in the safe below you."

And with that, he was gone. It wasn't the nicest thing someone could say to their son, but my dad wasn't nice. He reminded me to take out our revolver if there's anyone who threatens to steal something. For him, that's like an 'I love you.'

I spent the next two hours getting paid. Nothing interesting ever happens in this store, except there was an old man who barfed in the bathroom once. That was fun.

I was watching the centuries old box television when two kids walked in. I looked up. They seemed to be in an argument, the girl shook her head at the boy and rushed to the bathroom.

The boy had to be a couple years older then me, I hadn't seen him around before. They must have been new. He had curly blonde hair, almost white. He looked like he hadn't showered in days. His clothes were all rumpled as if he just woke up in them. His clothes were also dirty, ripped. I was betting he was homeless.

The boy came up to me and smiled. Placing two lunch packets, two coffees, a bag of chips, and two diet cokes on the counter.

I smiled back. "Hey, man." I scanned the food and beverages. "You come to a total of thirty-two ninety-five. How are you gonna pay?"

The boy reached into his pocket and pulled out a wad of cash. He took out two twenties and put the huge amount of money back into his pants. "Will that work?" He questioned.

I realized that the boy thought I was challenging how much money he had. "Sorry. Yes that will work."

The boy leaned his elbow against the counter and looked towards the rest rooms. "Hey man you know a motel around here?"

I looked up at him. "Yeah. Just go past Cornflake road and there should be one. I wouldn't recommend it though, it's not sanitary."

He smiled. "Oh dude if you'd see what I have been living in for the past two weeks, a lot is more sanitary."

I nodded. "Well I haven't lived all high and mighty either but that place... tsk tsk." I made and clicking sound with my teeth.

The boys eyes crinkled. He rubbed at some stubble on his chin. "I've got a bench truck full of empty cans and fast food containers. It smells like horse crap. Is that better or worse?"

Now it was my turn to look disgusted. I reached behind the counter and grabbed two garbage bags and some sanitizer. The boy laughed. I handed him the bags. "Here. On the house."

The boy nodded his gratitude as his friend came out of the bathroom. I realized she was probably worse off than the boy. Spots of her face was dirty, as if she just washed some of the dirt off. Her long blonde hair that went past her butt, had dried mud. The tips of her hair was a vibrant red like she dipped it in paint. She was wearing an old lace dress that was probably once white but now it was more of a beige.

She nodded to her friend and began to walk out. "Hey." I said. They both stopped. The boy looked at me in confusion, the girl just looked bored. "Um, my dad's gone for a couple of nights if you guys would like to stay here. I have an extra bed."

They exchanged glances, the girl had pleading eyes. The boy turned back to me. "Thanks man, but you don't know us."

It sounded more like a question than a statement. I cleared my throat. "Well, I think you guys look decently non-crazy. You look like you need a place to stay, and I have one. I won't even be upstairs all night. I have to man the store."

The girl tugged on his arm. "Come on, Kaiden. I want to shower." Her voice was soft and innocent.

The boy shook his head. "Thanks, but I think we're better off roughing it. See ya later man."

The girl smiled at me as he hauled her out of the store.

I spent the rest of the night wondering where those two were. Maybe I should have been more convincing, I really wanted to help those two.
