QUINTON

There was a bright light filtering into the room. The light felt like it was pounding through my brain. I groaned, rolling over and throwing a pillow over my head.

"Good morning sleepyhead!" Someone yelled. I groaned even louder. I felt someone flop down on the bed. I grabbed my head in my hands. "Well someone hasn't recovered from last night yet, huh?"

I moaned, rolling over so I could peer at Ashlyn better. Sunlight was filtering in through the blinds, lighting up her face. I squinted at her, I could barely make out any detail of her face. I sat up too quickly.

"Woah, easy there tiger. Here. Brought you coffee." She placed something in my hand.

I looked down at my bed. The black comforter was on the floor and the sheets were wrapped around my legs. There were red pillows that matched the sheets all around me. I huffed a big sigh and took a sip of coffee. It tasted bitter and old. I spit back into the cup.

"You got this from downstairs, didn't you?" I looked at her.

She smiled innocently, batting her eyebrows. "Me? get the horrible coffee from your store? For free? No. Never."

I laughed, then cringed at the pain in my head. "Time is it?" I said sleepily. "Not so fast." I said when she jumped off the bed.

She smiled at my pain as she walked through the sliding glass doors into the kitchen. "Half past 1:00." She shouted. Did I really sleep in that long?

I wrapped a blanket around my body, including my head, and walked into the kitchen. I sat down on a broken stool and faced Ashlyn. "Don't shout. You're giving me a migraine."

Ashlyn ran a hand through her hair and laughed. "And that has nothing to do with last night?"

I moaned. Groaned. And leaned on the counter. Ashlyn leaned on her elbows and ruffled my hair. I smiled. She hadn't done that in a really long time. Her hand moves down to the side of my face. I leaned into her, closing my eyes.

We hadn't shared a moment like that in a long time. I opened my eyes and looked at her bright blue ones. She smiled at me. I heard a noise and looked up.

I grinned. "Are you making coffee?"

Her smile grew wider as she backed away. "Yes, I am. This time it's not bad. It's going to taste bitter sweet, and good. Maybe if you're lucky I'll make you a nice greasy hamburger for lunch."

My stomach rolled and my head was spinning. "That's disgusting. Don't do that."

She laughed. I looked at her as she grabbed two cups from the cupboards above the sink. This was a normal thing that occurred with her coming over, yet I still couldn't get used to how well she knew my house.

Her curly blonde hair went straight down her back and curved around her amazing figure. I had never realized how beautiful she looked before.

I cleared my throat. "So uh... what exactly happened last night." She seemed a lot better than I did so I assumed she wasn't as drunk last night.

When Ashlyn turned around, her face fell. "You seriously don't remember anything?" She looked oddly serious.

I furrowed my eyebrows, shaking my head. She was acting strange, I wondered what stupid thing I did. I tried in vein to remember what I said. What could she get mad at me about?

Ashlyn turned to me. "Well, what do you remember?"

I scratched my forehead. "You convinced me to go to a party somewhere for your birthday. We used fake id's to get in. Um, we went dancing... I don't know, I guess that's it."

She nodded, pouring a cup of coffee. "You were doing shots with some of the older guys there and we danced to this really amazing band that I need to look up. Later in the evening, you got up on the bar and started dancing like a chick."

She dropped two sugar packets in my coffee, she knows what I like. "Later, you ended up barfing in the bathroom. We walked home together." She handed me the cup, not making eye contact.

I looked at her, I'd done something stupid, something that afended her. But what? I grabbed her hand and squeezed it until she looked at me. "Ash... what did I do?"

She stared into my eyes for a minute. The most intensely she ever has. Then, a slight smile appeared on her lips. "Then you barfed on my brand new shoes. Twice. I got those for my birthday!"

I laughed, then stopped when the piercing pain came back. "Seriously? Oh. I'm so sorry. I'll buy you another pair."

She pushed my shoulder, smiling. "Don't worry about it. I didn't really like that pair anyway."

I smiled at her. She smiled back, ruffling my hair. "So when's your dad get back? We need to get you cleaned up before then."

I licked my lips, tasting bile. I took a quick sip of the coffee sitting in front of me. "I don't know. Five? We haven't spoken for a week, how do you expect me to remember?"

She pushed my shoulder with a smile on her face. "Kay Quinton, well I have to be home before then, you go take a shower and we'll talk about a good video game to play after you're out."

I knew the real reason she wouldn't be staying for dinner, even if she didn't tell me. Ashlyn and my dad had a falling out a long time ago but I didn't know what the reason behind it was. Lately, she never wants to be around when he is home. I asked her about it once and she said that they were fine, nothing happened. But I knew my dad and her very well, they can't fool me with their smiles.

I laughed, grabbing my chest. "You always know the way to my heart."
