CHAPTER 20
I swung my legs over the side of my bed and shoved the covers off of me, stepping onto my cold wooden floor. As I shivered, I wrapped my arms around my body for warmth.
I had slept in my costume, minus the boots of course. That would have been too uncomfortable. Now, as I pulled my boots on, I realized how wrinkled and messed up my costume looked. Well, I wasn't planning on running into anybody, but if I did I hoped they wouldn't notice the wrinkled costume. Then they might think The Unseen didn't do her laundry.
Yesterday I had to go to school, but right now I was going to search for that reporter. I had to get the footage back before he released it. And I only had one chance to do that, since it apparently hadn't been released yet. I could only hope he'd had a change of heart, which would explain why it wasn't headline news today.
Thankfully I had noticed the name of his studio on the camera and bags he was carrying yesterday, and I had a fairly good memory. And I knew just where that studio was downtown, due to the Internet and maps. I shoved on my boots and grabbed my mask, sneaking quietly out the window.
It was so peaceful running this late at night. No cars, no people getting themselves killed, no noise. Just the bright moon shining down on me as I sprinted easily through the streets of the town. An occasional car passed by, but in the dark night they couldn't see me running. I was like a shadow, hidden in the darkness of the night. Unseen.
My fatigue soon wore off, and I ran along in a mindless grace, in a peaceful serenity.
Within minutes I found myself downtown. Even there, not much activity was going on. There were slightly more cars than there had been on the way here but it was easy for me to avoid them. Remembering the route as best I could, I navigated past the closed shops and found the news studio. It was easy to spot since it had the name plastered across the windows for advertisement.
Now how to retrieve the cameras was the problem. They surely had alarm systems rigged up, so I didn't know how I would get in. Certainly not through the door. Thankfully, as a kid I had watched a bunch of crazy spy movies when I was younger, and my parents had bought me a whole kit with spy equipment. It had come with one of those glass cutters that spies would use to break in places, and even though mine was small, childish, and definitely not professional looking, at least it worked.
I pulled it out of my backpack I had carried with me.
It was a tiny device, but it would do. Setting it up against the window, I hoped desperately the building didn't have alarms on the windows. If it did, I'd have to run away quickly and there would be no chance for me to grab the footage.
The sharp blade made a small circle on the window, which it suctioned on to, allowing me to pull out the glass.
I stuck my arm through the hole, a very tight fit, and unlocked the window. Now this part was easy. I pushed up the window and crawled through, cautiously observing the area for cameras. I doubted they would have any in this room, and I was right. Even if they did, I was dressed in all dark colors so they wouldn't be able to tell who I was.
I waited nervously for an alarm to go off, but there wasn't one. I was safe.
As I crept along, I felt like a criminal. Was I? No, I was just protecting my identity. I wondered though, if they caught The Unseen doing this, would they arrest me? Or would they believe I was just in the process of saving more lives, and let me continue? It was a complicated issue, and hopefully one I wouldn't have to deal with. I would be very grateful if I could make it in and out of here with no mess or trouble.
