“Denmark?” a voice called from a distance. A male, no older than twenty, beckoned to him. He had been strolling around, and was acting protective recently. He had been that way since tension had arisen around them.
“Hmm….?” Denmark turned around, greeted by the Finnish man’s saddened face before him. “What is it?”
“Su-san called a Nordic meeting, and told me to fetch you.” Finland replied, looking up at Denmark. Denmark nodded, and Finland lead the way back to the Nordic house, a couple hundred yards away.
Denmark was met in the sitting room by his friends. Sweden sat straight in a chair, looking directly up at him, not smiling, like always. Norway and Iceland were sitting across from him, Norway protectively looking at Iceland, who was only thirteen at the time. Iceland sat nervously, his eyes looking down at the floor. The entire room filled with tension that Denmark didn’t quite enjoy.
“What’s with the atmosphere? Sounds like someone died in here!” Denmark made his petty remark, but then quickly piped down when none of their expressions changed.
“Sit.” Sweden said, trying to sound as clear as possible. Denmark obeyed, and sat to one side of the couch, as Finland sat next to Sweden.
“What’s this all about?” Denmark asked, quickly quieted by no reply. Iceland glanced at Denmark for a second, but looked away when Denmark tried to return the glance.
“We want to ask something of you, Denmark-san.” Finland says quietly, unlike himself. Finland tends to enjoy himself, especially around Sweden.
Denmark turned his head to glance at Finland, whom seemed shy at the moment. Finland looked at the ground, placing one arm over another in a self-conscious way. It reminded Denmark of his Viking days, when Finland was more of a quiet tag along.
“We…want to…leave your house.” Finland said quietly, in a melancholy way. Denmark’s eyes slightly widened. They had been good friends, and for a moment, he thought he heard wrong. But Sweden proved him wrong with a nod of clarification.
“We need to separate from just our group, and form relations with other European countries.” Sweden replied carefully, pausing once in a while. Everything was off. Sweden was talking more than usual, Finland was shy once more, Norway was being extremely quiet and not making eye contact, along with Iceland.
This must be a dream, Denmark reassured himself. Everything is wrong. Yeah, it’s a dream.
“Denmark?” Finland asked worriedly. Denmark lifted his head towards Sweden and Finland.
“Your answer?” Sweden said, his expression never-changing. Denmark thought of the Viking age, when Iceland was only a kid, and they were all much younger. They were strong then, but it seems that life made them slow down. Maybe life needed Denmark to let them go.
“No.” Denmark replied. Looks of surprise arose on everyone’s faces. Everyone except Denmark. “I won’t allow it.”
“What do you mean you won’t allow it?!” Sweden’s voice rose over Denmark’s. Finland looked to his companion, who yelled at his brother furiously.
“I was clear, was I not?” Denmark replied bluntly. Even though anger was shown around the room, along with surprise and even disappointment, Denmark remained calm.
“You selfish jerk!” Sweden continued to yell at Denmark.
“Sweden.” Norway piped up. Sweden paused and looked at Norway. Norway had been quiet for a long time. “Enough.”
Denmark watched Norway rise from his seat, and walk off, followed by Iceland. Sweden got up angrily as well and walked off. Finland paused for a moment, then left quickly, following Sweden closely.
Denmark sighed, resting his hands on his head. He wanted to disappear, and be gone, so that none of this would’ve happened. If he could disappear, the rest of the Nordics would no longer be bound together by him.
