Oh, Calamity

Juliet's POV

"And here's medication in case you have any headaches or discomfort in your head," The nurse handed me a small bottle of pills.

" You're on bedrest for 2 weeks.  No physical activity.  After the two weeks you can exercise and things like that, but no heavy contact sports.  No football, wresting, soccer, or anything like that.  Do you have any other questions?"

I shook my head.

"Then I guess you're free to go."

I practically skipped down to the lobby where Alex was waiting.  I'm so happy I'm finally out of this damn hospital.

"Ready to go?" Alex asked me.

I nodded vigorously, "Hell yes."

"I'm baaacckkk!" I yelled as I got back on the bus.

"JAY!" Jack squealed as he wrapped me in a hug, "I love you and I missed you and I'm glad you're safe."

There was a guy in the back of the bus that I hadn't noticed before.  He was muscular but lean in build, had unruly short blond hair, and a deep scar ran from the corner of his lips to his upper cheek.  New merch guy maybe?  He turned to look at me and then I realized who he really was.

Jesse.

"Hi Jay," he said and took a step towards me. I took a step back.  Why is he here?  He should be in jail for what he did.

"W-What are you doing here?"

"Jay, let me explain-" He started.

"No.  Just get out.  Please."  I started to feel a lot like I did the first day in the hospital.  The knot in my stomach returned and everything was getting overwhelming really quickly.  I just wanted to curl up into a ball and cry.

"Jesse I think it's best if you head over to Kellin's bus for a bit," Alex said quietly.  Jesse nodded and silently went out of the bus.

"Why is he here?" I asked Alex.  The nervous feeling still wasn't going away.

"Uh, um..."

"Let me do it," Dani said and led me over to the couch.  We sat down and she took my hands.

"Okay Jay, I'm just going to say it straight out since there's no gentle way to put it: Alex adopted Jesse.  He's part of the family now."

Rage now burned in my mind.  Why would he do that?  Alex knew what he did to me.  He knew it!  All I want to do is escape my past with him, and what does he do?  He makes it so I never can.  I don't want him sharing my last name.  Gaskarth means I'm part of Alex's family.  Jesse's not.  He never will be.  I'm angry.  I'm so fucking angry.  I shot Alex a dirty look.  Alex looked at the ground.

"If it wasn't for Alex, Jesse would have been put in another reformation facility.  Is that really what's best for him right now?"

"Yes," I spat, "That is exactly what he needs."

"Jay, he cares, I've seen it-"

"If he cares about me then why did he do this?"  I lowered my voice to a whisper, "I don't want to talk anymore."

"That's okay," Dani said, "But you can't run away from him forever."

Alex's POV

"Fuck!" I swore as I stormed out of the bus, letting the door slam shut.  We were parked for the night and I needed to blow off steam.  I could see why Jay would be mad, it still hurts.  It hurts like hell.

"Angry?"

I spun around and saw Dani lying down on the small patch of grass near the bus.  I had no idea she was here.

"Come sit," She said and patted the spot next to her.  I looked around.  It's not like I have anything better to do and there's no way I'm getting on the bus.  I reluctantly sat beside her.

"You seem a little pissed off."

I rolled my eyes, "No shit, Sherlock."

"Well, I can see why.  You've got a great daughter.  I'd be upset too if she was mad at me," Dani started, "But to be honest, what other reaction did you really expect?"

"I don't know!  At the hospital they said either he goes with me, or he goes to a reformatory center.  I can't do that to Jesse.  He seems like a nice kid."

"Jay has a right to be angry," Dani pointed out, "She's been through some pretty traumatic shit."

"I know, I know," I said, "But I just don't know what to do next.  She's never been mad.  Pissed off, yes.  But never mad."

I looked up at the sky.  I could see a few stars.  The light from the city blocks out most of them, but these ones were shining brightly.

"Why are you out here anyway?" I asked Dani.

"That's not important," Dani said, "What is important is that you and Jay retain a normal relationship."

"No, really, why are you out here?  I know basically nothing about you besides the fact that you like taking pictures.  Tell me your story."  It occurred to me that Dani I have never really talked.  We've talked about little stupid things, but never had a real deep conversation.

"Story?  I don't have a story."

"Everyone has a story."

"Okay, how's this for your story: My parents named me Danielle.  I'm currently in that awkward moment between being born and dying.  The end."

I chuckled.  She's really cute, "That doesn't count.  I want a real story.  Who is Danielle?"

"Danielle was born in Minnesota.  Danielle's mother abandoned her and her father when she was a little kid.  Danielle's father remarried when she was about 10 to a maniac-Christian woman named Gayle.  Gayle didn't like the way Danielle's sense of humor or how she acted or dressed.  So Gayle tried to turn Danielle into a perfect little Christian girl.  But Danielle shut that down when she was 13 and started dressing in all black and dying her hair," I gently put my hand over-top hers.  Dani didn't move it.

"Luckily, Danielle grew out of the all-black phase, but she still really liked dying her hair.  Gayle wasn't trying to turn Danielle into a little Christian kid anymore, instead she criticized Danielle over everything.  Her looks, clothes, music taste, friends.  Everything.  Danielle couldn't wait to turn 18 and move out.  But as it turns out, she wouldn't have to wait that long.  Gayle kicked her out of the house when she was 16."

"Where was Danielle's father throughout all of this?" I asked her.

"Danielle's father was still there.  He was just powerless under Gayle's rein," She explained, "Anyway, so Danielle stayed with friends until she finished high school.  After that she took all of her money and bought a train ticket to Sacramento where she worked 3 part time jobs just so she could barely afford a tiny apartment and save up for a camera.  She was very thankful that Alex gave her the job because her landlord had already given her a 2 week notice to move out because she was so behind on rent."

"Where is Danielle going to go after tour ends?"  I put my arm around Dani's shoulders, pulling her closer to me.  She relaxed into my body.

"Danielle isn't sure yet.  She's probably going to stay with friends for a little bit," Dani said and rested her head against my shoulder.

"Alex would be fine with Danielle staying with him for a while."

Dani shook her head, "No.  Danielle doesn't want to intrude like that.  Besides, Alex already has Jay and Jesse to take care of."

"Jay and Jesse are self sufficient.  They can take care of themselves."  I really liked the way Dani looked in the moonlight.

A soft smile appeared across Dani's face, "Why is Alex looking at Danielle like that?"

"Because Alex thinks he's in love."
