Josh opened the door. He walked into the living room and found nobody so he stepped into the kitchen to find Danny holding Molly and whispering into her ear.
“Oh am I interrupting something? I just came to drop off some clothes for you, so I’ll just be on my way…” Josh remarked as a blush came over his face.
“No its ok, Danny was just comforting me from all the recent trauma.” Molly said softly and backed away. Danny’s words were echoing through her head….he loved her. But that was impossible; Molly was unlovable, nobody could love her.
Danny looked distraught and somewhat hurt but he ignored it and took the clothes from Josh. He went into the other room to change and Molly sat on the couch with Josh.
“What was just going on?” Josh asked politely. Molly just looked at him and took a breath.
“Danny was just comforting me, it was all just too much for me, I guess.” She answered in a small voice. “Um, excuse me.” Molly said quickly and she ran out of the room.
She ran into the bathroom and vomited. Why? She had no idea… when she was done she reached for the towel on the wall and wiped off her face, then she brushed her teeth and washed up. She looked in the mirror and found Danny standing behind her. He looked…strange.
“What do you want?” Molly asked sharply.
“How long have you been getting sick?” Danny barked back.
“Every day since my last accident. Now go away.” Molly said and she headed out of the bathroom. “Josh I think its time for you and Danny to-to-“ and Molly passed out. They didn’t bring her to the hospital. They laid her down on her bed and called the nurse who was helping administer meds to her. The nurse came right over.
“Alright boys I’m going to need you to help me with her now, she hasn’t informed me of anything that’s been happening and because she has been getting sick it means that she isn’t responding to treatment. So I need one of you to drive to the hospital and get a hold of Dr. Macunas.” The nurse replied then she set Molly on an I.V. Josh got into his car and left to get the doctor. Danny stayed behind and helped the nurse.
It took a week for them to discover what Molly had been infected with. She had been infected with a new form of Spanish Influenza. A sub-strand of H1N1 and at the time it was incurable. Molly had slipped into a coma. They thought she got it during her stay in the hospital; in the next room was another patient with the disease but not as heavily mutated as what Molly had. So they could only do a few series of semi-helpful treatments until they were updated.
Molly’s eyes zipped back and forth as she dreamed in her coma. She saw pictures of herself and a boy when she was younger. They were in her father’s nightstand underneath the bible. She turned them over and over and found one o the boy, her father and a woman with chocolate hair and green eyes. The boy had bronze hair and hazel eyes. On the back of the picture was the writing; Sally, Jason and me. On another of Molly and Jason it had Molly and her brother Jason, written on it. She didn’t believe it and her body broke out in a cold sweat with trembling hands.
Nurses rushed into the room to administer sedatives. They had no effect and so they panicked. Danny froze, his hands and knees shook and he finally mustered up the strength to reach Molly. He held her hand in her unconsciousness she felt his warm grasp and was comforted.
Inside her mind, Molly saw Danny and she didn’t know what to think. She heard his words run back and forth through her head and soon enough she didn’t know how to respond to him. She was sick and didn’t know how to wake up. She just held on to memories and then she felt something. She felt a flutter in her soul and replayed her time with Danny as it built. She had felt something for him, something strong; she just didn’t know whether it was good or bad…now she knew.
Molly opened her mouth to speak his name but couldn’t. She focused and very slowly moved her lips with the noise she wanted.
“Danny…” her voice was cracked and weak and her throat blistered. She opened her eyes slowly and the light blinded her. She scrunched up her face and her nose wrinkled like a rabbit’s would. Her hand was squeezed by another and she looked to it finding Danny. Her eyes widened and her face turned pink. She smiled like a fool and sat up in bed. “Danny, thank you. For everything, for having faith in me, for loving me. Please stay, and don’t ever leave.” She pleaded.
Danny froze, his face started to heat and he wrapped his arms around her. They were just quiet sitting there, holding each other. Then there was a knock at the door. Danny quickly shot up and ran to open it. In the doorway was a very happy, very tired Dr. Macunas.
“I have some very, very good news.” She said and entered to stand in front of Molly. “We have found a drug for you. It can’t cure you but can slow down the virus. It should give us enough time to find something like a cure. In a few hours I’ll be back with it. Your father has already signed the papers.”
