worse than the killing curse

No matter how slow he walked, Harry came to the snowy door sooner than he would have liked. No, thinking about it, he probably had no feelings left right now – now after the turmoil that the last days had been. And today he needed to do it as it was his turn after all.

Ginny had been here the day before yesterday with Ron and their reactions when they came back to Grimmauld Place hadn't been very good. Ginny had cried for hours and sat alone for another hour before she had uttered a word. Ron, on his turn, hadn't shed a tear – but probably created holes on the floor with his pacing.

Harry rubbed his hands on his face tiredly, waiting for the healer to come and allow him to enter the room. Finally, a woman who looked older than she probably was came frowning to him:

"Mr. Potter." She greeted silently and received a nod in return. When he was about to open his mouth to ask his usual question, the woman beat him to it. "We didn't have any accidents today, Mr. Potter. He is under the influence of heavy medication and probably will sleep through your conversation."

She opened the door anyway and he nodded his thanks. The healer, in return, offered him a look of pity before retreating. "Just call me should anything happen."

It always took his breath away, entering in this room. His old childhood nemesis, Draco Malfoy, lying in a bed in St. Mungos with both of his wrists attached to the bed – he had been judged dangerous to himself lately – and looking as much out of his mind as possible. Hating Draco or not, Harry thought he would always have felt something akin to sadness or pity at seeing the boy in such a situation.

And then the grey eyes that he feared to face opened up and stared at him with so much disappointment that Harry felt the need to feel ashamed of himself. "Potter?" Malfoy stuttered, looking around in confusion. "Why are you here? Weasley said Granger would be here today. She said Granger would come and visit. I have been waiting for her visit for a while now."

Harry could only shake his head as a new set of lies came rolled off of his tongue. "Hermione is... having trouble home. Crookshanks is giving her grief. Chewing on her books again."

"Ah, the fur-ball." Draco chuckled silently before disappointment came back to his expression. "But I thought she would come here today. There is something I need to tell her."

"Yeah?" Harry closed his eyes momentarily, willing his tears to go away. It had been this way for weeks now, ever since Hermione had jumped in front of a Killing Curse that was meant for Draco. And ever since then the younger Malfoy seem to have lost his ability to think coherently. And so Harry and several other people have been playing along, hoping that someone could make him understand what the picture of his situation was. "And what is it?"

"Nosy, are we?" Draco smiled and chuckled. "I left the Manor as she had asked. I think I will even accept to go to that headquarters she talks all the time. I thought she would like that."

Harry offered him a small smile. "Yes, she probably would..."

Draco dozed off for a second before his eyes came to focus on Harry again – and a frown marred his forehead. "What are you doing here, Potter? Today is Granger's day to come and sit with me."
