~ Armin's POV ~
I know it made no sense. But it was such a peaceful place. And besides they had a whole section of books written in Braille so I could read books if I pleased. At that time though, I had too much on my mind to read.He was so mysterious. I wanted to know more about him. Why did this happen? Out of the billions of people on the planet it was the one I couldn't communicate with who I had fallen for. Before you say 'but Armin you don't know if he's a bad person' I honestly don't think he is. That's when I heard the lady- what was her name? Nancy?- say "Nice to see you again Eren! Are you looking for a new book?" But that wasn't Eren- well the Eren I knew- was it?
But it just so happened that when Nancy asked her question there was no response. 'It's just a coincidence.' I thought to myself. And I convinced myself- for a full ten minutes. Until I felt someone sit down next to me on the couch I was sitting on. Deciding to ignore it I soon heard pages flipping. The pages were flipping for around two minutes when a tap on my shoulder scared me close to death.
There wasn't a response so I took my chance. "Eren?"
The person next to me said nothing in return. But after I asked my question I could've sworn they nodded their head. 'It has to be Eren.' I thought before there was an awkward and uncomfortable silence between us.
And at that moment I had my grand idea. "Eren. Can I ask you some questions?" Realising the fault in asking. I didn't know what his response was. So I thought up something and I thought it up quick, "Eren. Take my hand. I'm going to ask yes and no questions," at that point his warm hand took my cold, clammy hand, "squeeze my hand once for yes and twice for no. Sound good?"
At that point I felt Eren squeeze my hand once. 'A yes. Okay now what to ask...' My brain wandered off and soon my mind was filled with questions. 'Okay Armin just ask questions like they do in movies or something. The easiest fist and then the hard ones last' I reassured myself.
"U-uh... Do you enjoy reading?"
Eren squeezed my hand once.
"Okay... Is the book you have... Non-fiction?"
Two squeezes.
"Fiction?"
Two squeezes.
Maybe the third times the charm because I asked "Is it a foreign language?" And even through I expected the answer to be no it was different.
One squeeze.
"Okay no more yes or no questions. What language is it?" I'm pretty sure he knew sign language so I could cross that out. Right as I was about to ask something else the sound of pages flipping caught my attention. 'He's bored with me?' I thought, feeling distraught.
But then something odd happened. There was a tapping sound coming from the small table in front of us- the only reason I knew it was there is because I'd ran into it about a million times. Was that Eren tapping? What was he doing?
One of his hands still held onto mine and I had one last yes or no question.
"Morse code?"
One squeeze.
I don't understand
~ Armin POV ~
It's been a few days since the unplanned meet up at the library. The days drag on without Eren.As I sat in my living room there was only one thing I could think of. How the hell am I going to learn morse code?
The question was answered- not at the exact moment- when I heard a knock on my front door. It wasn't Marco knocking, because his knocking is more timid. The person knocking on the door was Jean.
"It's open Jean! Come in!" I yelled from my living room.
Jean spoke once he was sitting down next to me, "How the hell did you know it was me?" He asked, kind of in awe.
"The way you knocked." I answered simply. There was an awkward silence between us before I cleared my throat and began talking. "I actually wanted to talk to you about something-"
I was cut off by Jean saying, "You want to learn morse code."
Silence filled the room yet again. He was talking to Eren... Wasn't he? I couldn't find the correct words to say. English that I had known my whole life suddenly vanished, leaving nothing but stutters of words I couldn't for the life of me think of. Jean didn't keep talking, which was odd, it seemed as if he was trying to give me time to put my thoughts into words.
"He... I... Uh... I want to be able to... Communicate with him." I stuttered out suddenly, making Jean jump at the sudden burst of words filling the silence.
"I knew it. You are curious about the little-"
Jean couldn't finish the rude phrase before I cut him off, "Don't be mean. And, yes, I am curious. And I think you could potentially help."
Jean let out a small 'hmmp' and nothing more. Nothing more, that is, until he got to my front door. "Tomorrow. At the French cafe. I'll pick you up at eleven. Be ready."
I smiled. Tomorrow was going to be a fun day.
~-~
"This is impossible!" I sighed angrily, my head flopping down on the table in front of me.
"Don't be such a pessimist. Eren picked it up pretty easily." Jean said to me.
"Yeah but he can read the freaking book himself. I have an idiot horseface reading it to me." I shot back. Horseface was a joke with out friends. Though I don't really know what Jean looks like I just know it makes him irritated.
"Okay let me take this from a different approach. I will say a word and Eren will tap it out. Okay?" Jean asked.
"Wow Jean. For once in your life you have a good idea." I replied sarcastically.
"Shut up. Okay 'hello'" There were a few taps heard from where Eren was sitting. "Goodbye." More taps.
This went on for two hours and I could only decipher 'hello how are you?'
"I just don't understand." I complained.
There was silence that lasted longer than a normal conversation would go. "Eren said it will be hard for you. But you can't give up." Jean said.
Letting out a long sigh I turned to where Eren sat, though I didn't know where to look. "I know Eren it's just... I want to be able to talk to you now. I don't want Jean to have to tag along with us everywhere we go just so that I know what you're saying. No offence Jean."
"None taken," Jean replied before adding, "Eren says he understands that it's frustrating- God Eren that's fucking cheesy- and he also says to get to the rainbow you have to go through the storm."
I smiled. The saying was so cheesy. But it was adorable. He was adorable. Oh no. I think I'm in love.
