You are exhausted. It's finals week at college and you and your dorm mate have been studying nonstop for four days. You're on your way to the local coffee shop, in dire need for a break.
"Go order, I'll get us a table."
Becca, your roommate and best friend smiles at you, heading to the back of the cafe. You head to the front and lean against the counter, waiting to place your order.
"Two white chocolate mochas, please."
The lady nods and you stand off to the side, observing the cute little shop. Couples and friends litter the shag carpet floors and a small group of boys are playing instruments on a slightly risen stage in the corner of the room. They are quite, but sound good and relaxing. You seem to catch the eye of the boy sitting on the cajon. He has shaggy, curly hair and a goofy smile plastered on his face as he looks at one of his band mates.
Suddenly, you realize he looks awfully familiar....it hits you.
Ashton. You're old high school best friend and crush. It's been nearly three years since you've last seen him, and damn does he look good. He doesn't seem to notice you, though. You grab your coffees after you pay and make your way to Becca.
"Look at him, he's cute."
Becca hardly notices you as she watches the guitarist with faded green hair. You slide into the booth and glance back at Ashton.
"Bec....that's Ashton."
Her head jerks and her jaw goes slack. She looks frantically between Ashton and you.
"Like, Ashton Ashton? As in the love of your life Ashton?"
You roll your eyes, sipping from your hot beverage and trying to stop yourself from staring at him, though your heart beats wildly.
"He's not the love of my life. We haven't talked in years."
"Now's your chance. It's destiny."
She nudges you with her elbow, smirk evident on her face.
"Becs, he probably doesn't even remember my nam-"
"Y/n?!"
You both turn sharply back to the stage to see Ashton, his hazel eyes wide and mouth slightly hung open. You swallow hard, meeting his eyes for the first time in what feels like forever. He stops playing and you stop breathing.
"Ash."
A whisper escapes your lips and you know he can't hear it because you can't; your heart is pounding in your ears and drowning out your own voice. An innocent and beautiful smile spreads wide across his face and the green haired boy glances excitedly at you. You can't stop yourself from standing, so eager to be embraced in his protective yet loving grip again. He does the same and his eyes don't leave yours for a second.
Seconds later, you wrap your thin arms around his waist, hugging him as tight as you can. His chin rests gently on the top of your head.
"I can't believe it's you."
He mumbles into your soft hair. Your heart leaps and bounds in your chest, causing you to giggle slightly in euphoria. It's been over three years since you've seen him. You were both going to different colleges and figured it'd be the end of your friendship; any kind of long distance relationship was hard and you both knew it. Although it broke your heart. You would have done anything to stay with him, even if you couldn't be more than friends.
"I missed you, Ash."
You pull away from the hug a little, your fingers still laced together behind his back, to meet his eyes. He opens them slowly and you swear you see them sparkle with affection. The rest of the cafe seems to be a giant blur, all shadowed by the brightness in his hazel orbs. Your mouth becomes dry as you try to come up with words to describe how happy you are to see him again, but there are none. He speaks for you, like he always used to.
"Can we catch up?"
He asks somewhat shyly. You nod vigorously, following him to your table where your friend is seating, bouncing her leg impatiently. After introductions are made, you and Ashton are left alone. Joy continuously washes over you, leaving you drowning in his presence.
It's your first time seeing each other in so long, and you hope and pray it won't be the last. You know Becca's right, he's the love of your life.
But you knew that a long time ago.
