"Baby pink, hot pink or fuschia"? quizzes Kate, vacillating between said colors with the pointed ends of the nail of her index finger as she wiggles her expert eyebrows at me. Expert to my absolute imbecile self since I had a hard time believing that the fifteen tubes of nail paints, which all appeared pink to me (and Jose too), had apparently different names. That sentiment, I have now learnt (and Jose too), should've been kept to myself  when she gives me what I recognize as the 'the intimidating stare' before launching into an intense and explicit debate cum tirade into (and I quote) makeup, a woman's best friend after diamonds, leather jackets, Prada bags and Jimmy choo.

Anyways, that was an hour ago, and after dejectedly reconciling to the fact that some people were destined to remain half-witted in the accessory department, she finally and single-handedly narrows down her choices to three shades before asking (more like demanding) my input. Jose chuckles at his PC, having excused himself on account of being a guy.

I sometimes envy Jose.

I decide to heed to my own advice this time and nod towards the second tube, having no idea if it was hot pink or fuschia or baby coral or salmon or whales. Weird.

The exams had finally come to an end this afternoon, hence the half painted toenails. I had desperately wanted to catch up on the Supernaturals, but Jose the junkie had defeated me in a mean game of stone paper scissors and I had to settle at writing the school paper which is on its way to being completed in another twenty minutes while Jose, after having exhausted the Netflix supply is currently flipping through the tv channels to cure his withdrawal. Or maybe his mind has successfully disapparated to an alternate dimension where they broadcast the big bang theory twenty-four-seven.

"What the hell are you writing anyway", Kate quips, looking a tad bit irate at the relative silence in the room. The girl absolutely detests silence and loves to tarnish it like nobody's business. "The existent social stratification in school- how to break the mould and avoid being stereotyped. Huh, how typically you."

It is. Typically me that is. Kate can snort and snub me all she wants but she knew very well what this paper meant to me. A means to an end. I had no journalistic ambitions, the paper just served as an outlet for me to vent out my feelings on the system which was constantly stereotyping and breaking people under the guise of impartiality. If you guessed already, I'm not what you'd call a people's person, I was constantly angry, perpetually dissatisfied and in the mood to rebel, but breaking noses and going ninja on more than a few asses doesn't always help the issues. It doesn't go down well with school authorities either. My solution, the paper. As its chief editor, I had previously written several, thought-provoking, riot inciting, mass triggering pieces, but this one was a very mild one in comparison. I am in a mood to surprise my teachers, pleasantly that is. At least I'd get to avoid             Mr Moseby's horrified face and him going ballistic on my ass this week.

"Hey Jose, if you're done with the loony toons, I'd like my chance with the tv before midnight", I fib to which he immediately responds by clutching the tv remote and placing it on the sofa, directly underneath his ass. Sucker. I cannot help but laugh.

Jose was the only guy who ever really got me. Don't get me wrong, I'm not an uptight loony bitch with boy issues or an overly awkward clumsy female who trips on her own two feet everytime she gets approached by a guy. In fact, boys were never really an issue for me, but neither do I get over friendly. Not very social, like I said. My sparkly rep didn't help matters either. Or maybe it did help, depending which side of the issue I'm arguing. Anyway, Jose knew all there is to know about me, except one other guy and I'd much rather not talk about that guy. Kate had transferred from Boston about two years ago so she wasn't really privy to the pernickety details of my past that involved him. What little she did know came from the unofficial grapevine, but she never questioned me about it, having sensed my initial reluctance and I am grateful for having two such amazingly loyal friends by my side. There were times, however when she couldn't help but give in to her curious mind. Today is one of those times.

"What was that by the way? never in a million years did I expect Christian to ask you out. He sure looked sincere though".

Can't say I'm surprised by the question. I'm kind of impressed with her ability to hold it in this long when her eyes had all but popped out when Christia... the guy foolishly approached me. And yes, I've gone back to calling him the guy.

"He hasn't really asked her out. Only to a foolish school fest" Jose returns, before finally surrendering the TV remote to come join us on the bed.

"Semantics, semantics. Love fest is kind of a big deal. So.. are you going?" she asks trying to appear nonchalant and failing miserably. One would think I was being courted by Chris Hemsworth, going by the shining glee in her eyes. One would think I wanted to go out with Chris Hemsworth.

Sigh... one would be right, about the second part at least.

"When pigs fly. Nope, not even then. The only place I can see Christian and I going together is the principal's office after I beat his monkey squad bloody. Let's hope for both out our sakes it doesn't come to that."

"But.."

"Enough about those losers already", Jose interrupts, robbing Kate of her opportunity at the Spanish inquisition "I'm hungry and I hear a double cheese chicken chunky pizza calling my name from afar. Let's go quickly before the mice here begin to party", he jokes, patting his stomach. Kate finally takes the hint and keeps quiet while I shut my laptop after saving my work and collect my car keys, pushing the subject of Christian somewhere at the back of my mind. No way in hell was I going anywhere with him and that was that.

How stupid was I to make such assumptions only to be proved wrong the very next day.
