Kara's POV
My phone goes off and I answer it quickly to diminish the number of glares I've gotten. Apparently you're not supposed to have your phone on at the library. Whoops.
"Hey." I whisper so the other people won't be annoyed by my talking. Not that I care if they're annoyed or not; it's just that it's easier to research when you don't feel everyone glaring at you. That's what I was doing at the library: researching. I'd never actually read for fun, especially not mysteries, action, or fantasy. Or romance, ew. Basically I don't like reading any book for any reason other than research.
"Agent," Great, it's Kyle. He's one of my 'team' mates although we do nothing as a team except keep each other informed. "Daniel spilled."
"What?" Okay, now I'm surprised. First of all, I thought Daniel was one of Scorpion's more loyal playtoys. Secondly, what did he spill about? He couldn't have known much. He's just an errand runner really, not really trusted with agent or mission details.
"Apparently the cameras picked up Daniel listening in on your conversation with Scorpion." I can detect the smirk in Kyle's voice. Stupid me, I should've been able to detect Daniel right away. He's not that sneaky. "Afterwards he ran off and took a vehicle he was unauthorized to drive, and disappeared."
"And why didn't you notice?" I taunt. Taunting is the only immature and not-so-serious trait I possess. When I'm not taunting I'm as serious as a brick. Kyle doesn't answer and so I continue, "You used to be the head of vehicle security so you should've noticed." That'll get him. He always complained about not getting enough credit for guarding the vehicles and keeping them all in order and blah blah blah and happily left that job. Still that job used to be his so I make him mad by undermining him, it's fun.
"Get back on topic agent," Kyle growls at me. Oh, so he's allowed to undermine me but I'm not allowed to do the same to him? Yeah right, good luck buddy.
"How much had he discovered about the mission," I won't use 'my mission' because then it would sound like it's my fault Daniel got the info.
"We don't know how much he heard about your mission," I grit my teeth as I hear the obvious accusation in his voice, "but since he doesn't know who all the assassins in the base are and he didn't look through the window, I'd doubt he knows that you were assigned to the mission. However he may know who the target is and when he got to the SHEILD base, he probably told them everything he knows, including our location."
"Wait, not if but when? You didn't tell me this earlier," I hissed. Kyle groans slightly. "I was in the vicinity!" I whisper-yell at him, "I could've caught him if you clodhead actually kept me informed like you're supposed to do!"
"Nice hypocrisy lady," ooh I hate it when he calls me lady, "you haven't told me anything that happened in your mission yet." There is a brief pause before he starts taunting me, "unless of course you've accomplished nothing?" He had to end it in a question. Dang, now I have to respond to that jerk.
"Nothing you'd need to know," I sneer.
"Nothing productive then." Kyle snaps and hangs up. Jerk.
One thing about my anger is that it either helps me to think faster, or blocks my thinking. In this case it blocks my thinking. Great job Kyle, you just delayed my success and you're just going to taunt me about how long I'm taking. Oh well, this is my second day so it's not too bad.
Sighing I decide to go for a walk. Maybe I'll process something in the books I've read about Captain America. Don't know what though; I already know everything that my base knows about him, which is a lot.
I see Steve and Tony Starke walking down the road as I exit the library. Really, Steve hangs out with Iron Man? Then again, Tony did own a big business and like everyone knew him before he was Iron Man, so it's not too surprising to see him talking with a normal person.
"Hey Steve!" I call, running up to catch up with them. I don't know why I did it; my instincts just told me to. One thing I've learned; always trust your instincts. If you've been trained that is, the world would be a disaster if everyone trusted their instincts without proper training first.
Steve starts turning to wave to me but Tony whispers something in his ear. Since I'm an assassin and such I've been trained to hear things that aren't meant for me to hear. What I heard did not surprise me at all. "Does she look nice?" Ugh! Typical Tony Starke, only talking to the pretty girls.
I wouldn't say I look nice. I mean, my brown wavy hair is nice, and my eyes are a camo colour, but I'm not one of those 'sexy' princess wannabees.
"I think so." Steve replies, grinning in greeting as I catch up.
"Hey." He greets me while Tony pretends to not notice me, checking me out thorugh his peripheral discretely. Finally he seems to approve of my appearance and turns to me.
"Hi." I greet Steve, ignoring Tony completely.
"Hey." Tony shoots me a wink and starts looking me up and down, checking me out. Come on, couldn't I have been assigned to assassinate Iron Man, aka this creep, instead? It would be so much more satisfying. Plus I want to punch him senseless for his actions. I mean he is so immature; checking all the pretty girls out. I mean, I'm only 18! No way am I going to 'hang out' with Tony Starke. He'll probably ask me if I want a drink in 3... 2... 1...
"Well I'm heading to get a drink," Tony says casually, "want to come?"
See, I was right! My reply comes instantly. "No."
Tony's smile disappears and he rubs his hands together. "Well, see you then." He struts off acting all important.
Steve throws me an apologetic smile. I smile back. Wait, I can smile? Cool, didn't know that.
"So, what's your name?" He asks me and I realize I never told him.
"Ag..." I was about to say 'Agent.' That's all anyone ever calls me; Kara is more of a nickname than a real name to me so no one uses it. "Um.., Kara"
"Nice name."
I see the secret in his eyes again and instantly feel like I need to find out what it is. "Could you teach me how to skate?" I blurt out, not realizing what I said till I said it. I can be like that; sometimes my body seems to act on its own accord. Like I said; instincts. Though it would be nice if my instincts got me involved more often.
"Sure thing, grab your skates and meet me at the pond tonight? It'll be less busy then."
"Sure!" I reply before running off to my hotel room. Did I really just say that? C'mon instincts what aren't you telling me?
I replay everything that happened these past two days in my head as I lay in bed staring at the ceiling fan go round in circles. My brilliant mind starts putting things together and a thought slips into my mind.
What if Steve is Captain America?
