Elena would never have thought that it would hurt this much.

She wasn't in love with Klaus. She wasn't (no, really - she was not). But sometimes, Klaus would run his middle finger along her cheekbone and his thumb would brush against her long eyelashes and she would think that this - that this is what it feels like to be adored.

But nothing that comes along with Klaus is easy and she had known that from day one (so why was her heart aching worse than when she lost her parents going over that damned bridge?) but yet, she had still given herself to him.

It was his blood. It was his fucking blood.

But Elena knew it wasn't. She knew because she wanted to hit Caroline. She wanted to slap her across the cheek and tear her hair out. She wanted to hurt her.

Klaus had promised. He had promised that he didn't want Caroline. So what was he doing now?

She watched as he opened her hand, his sweet - his toe curling amused smile gracing his lips as if he wasn't further pushing the knife into Elena's heart. And then he placed something inside it and Elena couldn't see what it was even with her vampire abilities. Caroline smiled widely and her eyes crinkled and then - and then Klaus kissed her.

He kissed her.

Why - why did he kiss her?

Just hours before they had graduated and she and Caroline were best friends again. She had become friends with Stefan and Bonnie again and they accepted her. Stefan had accepted her.

Damon.

Damon has been gone since the night that they broke their bond.

And Bonnie? Bonnie was her most faithful friend. She accepted and supported her no matter the consequences. Elena wished she could say the same for Caroline.

And they were still kissing. Elena wanted to hurl. Her vision was becoming blurry. She could feel her fangs begging to be set free - and her blood. Her blood sang for him. It sang for vengeance.

How could Klaus do this to her? How could he fuck her an hour before he kissed another woman? And Caroline knew she had an agreement with Klaus. So why was she kissing him back as if Tyler didn't exist? Caroline was the most hypocritical of them all.

When they pulled away, he sensed her. She sensed him all the way from the Salvatore mansion where she was spending the evening with Stefan, Bonnie, Matt and Tyler. And their bond - their blood bond - led her to the Grille.

His eyes turned to her slowly as if he could barely manage his shame and when his eyes met hers, he didn't look cruel. He didn't look cocky. He looked as if he didn't know what to think.

But then - he looked at her as if he felt sorry for her.

It made her sick. It made her furious. She wanted to drive a stake through his heart.

Instead, Elena looked at Caroline who was wisely looking down at the counter of the bar, her fingers shaking slightly. Elena still couldn't see what she was holding.

Her rage - although she was beginning to have less trouble containing it - almost drove her over the edge. Her feet were already moving her towards the pair but then she stopped as realization hit her.

She didn't need Klaus. She didn't need him and she shouldn't want him either. He was using her for his own damn amusement while he saved the tender behaviour and loving glances for her so-called 'best friend'.

Elena was a free, independent woman. She didn't need to be around the likes of him.

And so she stopped and only looked at the pair once more before she left. She heard the guilty words of Caroline and the deafening-silence of Klaus.
