Their food arrived at the table as they ordered more coffee. May shuffled from her leather jacket and pulled her phone from its pocket. Ria took the first bites of her meal while May skimmed over her emails quickly, replying to urgent ones and deleting irrelevant ones. After a few minutes of silence and at least 50 emails later May began to eat her own meal.
Ria took this as her cue to begin conversation again. 'So what other interesting love life stories do you have?' Her tone was casual but her insides were exploding with interest.
'Oh god. Where the hell do I begin?' May groans, falling further into her seat and loosing her straight posture.
'At the beginning?' Ria prompted.
'Well. Uhm. This is probably going to get awkward, because all the relationships worth mentioning involve sex. And to be completely honest, the only relationships I took seriously were ones where it was involved in.' May's tone was yet again blunt.
'It's ok, just go for it, it can't be that bad' Ria responded.
May didnt want sex to be an awkward topic, especially having the title of being Ria's guardian. When May was growing up, nothing of the sort was talked about until May was eighteen and by then it was obviously too late. But from there on out it had been a very open and comfortable subject, within reason, between her and her mother. That experience made her realise that when she had her own kids she wanted sex to be a comfortable, non-judgemental, all questions allowed topic within the family. And taking on legal guardianship of Ria meant she would put those thoughts into practice.
'Ok, well. My first sort of real boyfriend was the second year of high school. His name was Josh and he was that typical sort of guy you'd most likely see at the gym. Like dark hair in a crew cut, a square face with a wide jaw and a massive chest in comparison to his waist. Anyway his family was super religious, so we done the whole 'we're just best friends' thing. And trust me, I know all the tricks woman so dont even try that shit on me.' She laughed 'So we were the typical teenage relationship, making out whenever we could and then that progresses and you start groping each other, and then that progresses and you get experimental. We never actually had sex. We didn't last together all that long. We had absolutely nothing in common, nothing and my parents hated his parents so that in turn made me begin to dislike him. But never the less he was the first guy I'd ever given a blow job to and he was the first guy to ever get to touch me so it's got to count for something. He was a complete dickhead though and now he's some tradesman who, surprise surprise, works out. And I only know that from the amount of selfies 'at the gym' or 'at the boxing ring' he posts on Facebook. He also is dating one of those women who have the really big muscles and fake tans and do those competitions? She's really pretty and seems nice, I have no idea how Josh got so lucky.' May could easily find the humour in her naivety.
'So did you guys go on dates or was it like a secret?' Ria asked
'Oh god no, Josh was definitely not the kind of guy who asked you on a date. If you were lucky you would get to have dinner with his family 'as friends'. May used air quotations and a deep voice to act like Josh before completely cracking up in laughter.
Ria joined in the laughter. She was still in a bit of a shocked state. She knew of a few of her sisters boyfriends but could never imagine this. It made her secretely hope she'd have more luck with guys at her new school than May had had. It also put her off gym buffs.
'So after Josh was Kaleb. Which I'm sure you would somewhat remember? We dated for over a year too. I met him only weeks after Josh and I broke up. We went to different schools and he was graduating high school that year, so he was obviously a bit older than me. But for whatever reason we actually worked. We had had some event that was for the private schools in the area which we both attended. And I had run into him in a hallway and he went to kiss me on the cheek, he was really cute in those ways, and I had accidentally turned my head and we awkwardly kissed. We'd both walked away awkwardly but two days later he asked me on a date.' May shook her head at what happened. She can remember it like it was yesterday and she wonders if Kaleb can too.
