The Game

The next day at school was one that passed by quickly for me. I was too excited for after school to even focus on anything that was going on in my classes. This was my first year being Captain of the girls soccer team and I was quite proud to lead the girls through the past two victories. The games were something Chloe was allowed to come watch because her mom liked me and liked watching the games.
My pre-game ritual was the usual, stick my headphones in with my favorite music on the loudest volume until the game began. I wouldn't talk to anyone until it started and it was how I really got focused on the game itself.
As we headed to starting positions I was in my zone and prepared to receive the ball from Chelsea; she was our main starter. Chelsea gets the ball and immediately passes it to me. I go dashing down the field with the ball kicking it along looking all around making sure I'm clear. I dodge the girls in front of me, left, then right, the right again. I'm so close to the goal that I can taste the sweat rolling down my cheeks. As I get close enough I rear back my leg and kick the ball to the left far enough that the goalie can't get it. First goal of the game is mine and the small crowd of bystanders is going wild.
The second start begins and the other team has the ball, Jordan brushes past one of their offensive players and steals the ball from them. She starts running by herself down field as I follow trying to cover her. I move left seeing she's getting cornered. She passes to me and I send it flying into the goal a second time. Goal.
As we start again the other team seems much angrier now. Chelsea is shoved out of the way as I move forward to steal the ball. Right as I grab the ball from the other team, the crowd cheers triumphantly as I feel something sweep my feet out from under me and I land on the ground with a thud. My head smacks against the ground as the next thing I see is a sharp cleat come for my face. I duck as much as I can as the cleat comes into contact with my scalp and snaps my head backwards.
A whistle blows in the distance as I see referees running on the field towards me with medical help. My brother is next to run on the field towards me yelling my name but it's a bit hard to hear him. Lastly out of the corner of my eye, I see Chloe break free from her mothers grasp and run towards me.
As the officials are examining my head the team has encircled us and all I can hear is Chloe screaming at them to let her through. My brother stands tall and looks her in the eye as she finally reaches me.
"And who in gods name are you?" He yells at her.
"I'm her girlfriend! Who do you think you are?" She yells back at him, then immediately clamps her hand over her mouth.
"Oh my god." He says looking from Natalie to me. "This just can't be."
No this can't be happening right now.
"John!" I say as loud as I can muster. "John come back please!" I try to lift my head but I immediately fall back to the ground.
"Liv, I'm so sorry!" I hear Chloe saying as she holds my hand. "Please forgive me!"
"Chloe, I'm not mad at you." I say as everything goes black.
