We had been on the road for about a month now, but it has gotten easier because along the way, we picked up an abandoned truck and luckily there were the keys to it left nearby to it. So we have been traveling around in this truck, stopping to help out people in need of it. We have met lots of different people, but never stuck around enough to get to know them too well. We have had many people ask to stay with us, and my sister was plenty willing to, but after many intense discussions with Devyn about this, my decision to not let anyone get too close to us was not going to budge. I was not going to trust anyone, not after what happened with Jeremy. Any of these people could stab our backs and leave us for the zombies, so there was no way I was going to give them the chance.

Even though we never stuck around long, my sister and I loved to help out others. We had many adventures and helped many amazing people. Once we were driving through a city, and we two teenage girls, a teenage boy, and a small child were hiding around a corner, and zombies were around the other corner. It was obvious they were trying to hide, but they would not be hidden for long because the zombies were rapidly approaching. So we quickly drove by, picked the four of them up and took them to safety. We also loved to talk to the people, and hear their stories. We learnt from these four that the two girls were named Sylvia and Crystal, the boy named James. Crystal and James were brother and sister, and Sylvia and Crystal were best friends. Their parents were killed much like ours, so they set out of their town looking for a place of safety. Along the way, they found an infant abandoned at the side of the road, and decided to keep it with them. Their story was very sweet with them taking in a baby and Devyn was very open with them, but when they asked to stay with us I politely declined. It was just my sister and I; I did not want anyone else, even though Devyn thought otherwise.

She was so easy to rely on; she often had others trusting her right away. Even though I found people trusted me as well, I was never willing to have given that trust back to them. I guess after I lost my parents and Jeremy left me to die I have not been that easy to trust people, even though Devyn is the total opposite. She can trust every person we meet and never have a care in the world about being betrayed. Sometimes I wish I could be like her, but I am also glad I had a guard up. In this new world, you could not trust anyone too much. I said in the beginning it would always be just my sister and I, and I plan on keeping it that way. Even though I would never trust the people we helped, helping them was always very self-rewarding. One of my favorite experiences was one that happened last week.

We had been driving down the side of the road and saw a mother and her child walking along. We asked where they were headed, and they said they were not entirely sure. I told them it was not safe to be out at the side of the road in the middle of nowhere, so I said we would take them to the next town over. While we were driving on the outskirts of the town, we saw a man trapped in a car surrounded by zombies. We told the woman and her kid to stay in the truck, also to shout if there was any trouble, and we went to rescue the man stuck in the car. We killed all of the zombies around the car, so we were able to get him out of there. We got him out but had to help him walk to the truck because he had an injury to his leg, but we never even made it to the car before the woman and the child ran out of the car to the man, embracing him. It turns out; the woman and the man were married. When the zombies started, he was at work and she was home with their son (The boy who was with her). They get separated and have been since day one, until now. The joy on their faces to see each other was priceless. By the way they looked at each other and were always holding one another; I could tell how in love they were. A small thought came to mind, that I wanted a love like theirs, everlasting. I quickly shook that thought out of my head though, reminding myself that I never wanted love. Shortly after we said our goodbyes and parted ways.

Even though I was reluctant to take people with us, Devyn was different. We once came across this teenage boy, my sister’s age. They took to each other fast and my sister really liked this guy. He stayed with is for a while because Devyn really wanted him to, so I let him this one time. He stayed with us, me sitting in the front driving while they sat in the back acting all sweet and loving to each other. Even though I was glad my sister was happy, she pulled away from me. We brought him on our rescue missions, but after the first one I knew he was going to be no good at this. He was useless, not being fast or good with fighting or weapons. I kept him around for Devyn, but after one mission where he almost got not only himself killed, but also almost me because I had to go and save him. After that event I had a serious talk with my sister, but by the end of it she agreed with me that keeping him around was not safe for us, so she told him he had to go. I could tell my sister was slightly disappointed, but she assured me she was fine, and it was just me and her.

Another time we picked up a boy, he took a liking to me, and for the first time in a long time I felt a liking towards him as well. I started to trust him a little bit, and things went on between us for a few days. I soon came to my senses though... I could not trust anyone! I coldly told him he had to go, and my sister and I left. Later that evening, the stars were beautiful and Devyn and I decided to pull over and sleep in the back of the truck underneath the stars. As we lay there we talk about today’s events.

“Why did you leave him? I thought you liked him. He certainly liked you” Devyn asked me.

“You know I can’t Devyn, I do not ever want to trust anyone too much, or like them too much either. That is why I left like I did, I started to like him and trust him and that can’t happen. Things are better off this way, it being just you and I” I answered.

“One day, you will find a boy who you will let in, I promise.”

“Yeah yeah, I am tired now. Can you sing to me?” I asked her.

“Of course.” I lied with my head on Devyn’s lap, getting comfortable and waited.

I don’t know why my sister was so guarded. Love is about taking the risk, and it is so worth it. I get that she has been hurt very badly in the past though, I just hoped she found the guy who could help to take her guard down and to love her and teach her how to love again.

“I don't mind spending every day

Out on your corner in the pouring rain

Look for the girl with the broken smile

Ask her if she wants to stay awhile

And she will be loved

And she will be loved

Tap on my window, knock on my door

I want to make you feel beautiful

I know I tend to get so insecure

It doesn't matter anymore

It's not always rainbows and butterflies

It's compromise that moves us along, yeah

My heart is full and my door's always open

You come anytime you want, yeah.

Tap on my window, knock on my door

I want to make you feel beautiful” I sung to her our favorite song from before the zombie apocalypse hit.

“Rose, I know you will be loved. You just have to find that special guy who is going to get you through everything. Until that happens though, I will always be here” I whispered to her. I see a faint smile appear on her face, but then it is quickly gone as she falls into a deep sleep, and I soon fall asleep very soon after her.

We woke up the next morning and started to drive again. It was kind of nice just driving around with no real destination or no deadlines, which was the only good thing about this all. As we were driving down the road we spotted a boy farther down waving his hands, trying to get our attention. We stopped and got out of the vehicle, and in front of us was the most amazing boy I have ever seen. Perfect blue eyes and blonde hair, as soon as I laid eyes on him I got butterflies in my stomach and my heart started to race. Oh no… This can’t be good.
