NATHAN'S P.O.V
My palms were sweating as I dragged myself upstairs, my breathing becoming shallower with each step I was taking.
"Babe?" I mumbled, trying my hardest to keep my voice from breaking like I was going through puberty again.
I was greeted with a smile on Beth's lips as I entered the bedroom.
I really couldn't talk myself out of this any longer, I had been with Beth for 6 years, I really think it was about time that I popped the question.
"Beth, I -" I sighed as I was cut off by the sound of the doorbell ringing. A heavy sigh escaped my lips as I strolled downstairs, shoving the tiny box back into my pocket
God knows how long it would stay there now
I opened the door and swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat as I saw two police officers stood on the doorstep.
They were both at least 5 inches taller than me.
"C-Can I help you?" I mumbled, my palms starting to sweat again as I clenched my fists.
"Nathan Sykes? May we come in for a minute?" One of them asked, taking his black cap off his head.
I nodded in response as they made their way into the living room, perching themselves on the edge of the beige sofa.
I glanced at Beth as she came downstairs, a confused expression on her face.
"The police are here. What if it's about what happened at the airport?" I asked, trying my hardest to stop myself from shaking.
Beth sighed as she placed her hand on my shoulder, rubbing it gently. I sighed a little in relief as I felt the warmth of her skin through my shirt.
"Everything is going to be fine Nathan, just don't speak unless you're spoken to." Beth told me, a stern look on her face.
I knew better than to argue with her on this occasion.
I took her hand in mine and squeezed it gently as I walked into the living room, sitting on the sofa opposite the police officers.
I was doing my best to keep Beth next to me, without pulling her onto my lap.
"We are here because we need to speak about what happened at the airport earlier today with Mr. McGuiness."
I swallowed hard and glanced at Beth, holding her hand even tighter in mine, I think I was about to stop the circulation of blood reaching her fingers.
I nodded once again in response, waiting for them to carry on.
"Can you tell us your side of the story, Mr. Sykes?"
I sighed before swallowing again, my throat was as dry as sand paper.
"He took Grace onto a plane, and I flipped and punched him." I mumbled.
"And what happened before that?"
I sighed as I gazed over at Beth, who was now looking down guilty at our joined hands.
"My girlfriend kissed him, and I punched him then as well." I whispered, barely audible.
I could tell that Beth was still feeling guilty about that kiss, and in a way, I was glad.
The police officer that had taken his hat off sighed, the other still remained silent, still with his hat perched on his head.
"We need to speak to Mr. McGuiness again, and then we'll be back."
Both police officers rose to their feet, making their way to the door without saying a single word.
I sighed as I leant over to my left side, leaning my head on Beth's shoulder as I felt the small box digging into my thigh.
"I can't go back to prison, Beth. I can't do it." I mumbled as fresh tears sprung into my eyes.
I relaxed a tad as I felt the palm of Beth's hand travelling up and down my back, closing my eyes tightly as I nuzzled into her neck.
"It won't come to that Nathan, I won't let you go back there."
I knew there was nothing Beth could do if I got arrested again, but I trusted her.
I believed her promise.
I really did.
I nodded and stood up, pulling Beth up with me as her hand was still firmly in my grasp.
"I really think we should get some sleep, it's been a really long day." I shrugged my shoulders.
Beth nodded and went back upstairs as I followed behind her, quietly going into Grace's room.
She was curled up, with her front facing the door. A smile formed on my lips as I saw her cuddling her favourite toy rabbit to her chest.
I quietly closed the door before going into mine and Beth's room, a smirk forming as I saw Beth with her back facing me, wearing nothing at all.
"Wow." I mumbled, stepping closer to her, wrapping my arms around her waist, nuzzling my face into her neck as a giggle escaped her lips.
"What's so funny?" I asked, grinning.
"You stubble tickles." Beth grinned, turning to face me as she bit down on her bottom lip.
I smirked wider, licking my lips before pressing my lips against hers, moaning slightly as she pinned me down on the bed before I sat myself up, pulling my shirt over my head.
Beth smirked as her eyes scanned over my chest as I bit my lip again.
I pushed my jeans off, and they fell off the bed to the floor with a thump.
Beth raised her eyes at me as she bent down to pick my jeans up, before my eyes widened.
Shit.
The box.
I swallowed hard as I sat up, still in just my boxer shorts as Beth's hand dug through my front right hand pocket.
"Beth-" I mumbled, starting to panic slightly.
I watched as Beth opened the small, red velvet box to show the ring that I had been hiding for the past few months.
The ring I was planning to propose in the right way with, for it to be romantic and cute.
And this is what happened.
It fell out of my pocket when my girlfriend was undressing me to have sex.
Brilliant.
Only me.
"W-What's this, Nathan?" Beth mumbled, looking at me, the box trembling in her hands.
Shit.
