The biggest mistake that freshman make is thinking that your freshman year doesn't count towards college application. The myth that grades can be improved later on IT'S FAKE! Colleges look at your freshman and senior year of high school. Slacking off your first year will make it harder to catch up later and your GPA will suffer. I'm not exaggerating this time, your GPA is essential. Don't forget your freshman year grades count towards your GPA too.
How do you keep good grades throughout the year? You will need to befriend a teacher. Not like 'Oh lets go out and see a movie' friend, more like a 'Hey I need help improving my grade in the class' friend. Teachers share important information during class. Listening to their lectures, it helps you understand the subject better. You never know what will end up on the test. Paying attention AT ALL TIMES is key. Don't miss homework either. Homework assignments help you learn the subject matter better. Not only is it important for your GPA, it can also help you with the test. Again, your GPA is your ticket to the college of your dreams.
Some teachers might be able to accommodate and give you extra time for you to complete your assignments. Just so you know, if it's late it doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. Now, you need to understand, not all teachers do this. It might decrease your points, but that's better than a missed assignment on your record. Trust me; seventy percent is better than a zero. There are benefits in doing assignments. Even if you're turning them in late: You are more likely to retain the material and have a better grade. Avoid all of this trouble, and like Nike says, JUST DO IT.
Your future is your responsibility. You shouldn't let personal feelings interfere in your path to success. You won't get along with everyone in life, and you're not here to be popular either. Transitioning into high school might make you think that you need to be popular, NEWS FLASH, you don't. Worrying about your personal relationships in school will most definitely jeopardize your high school career. When you realize the truth in these couple of years it will be too late to fix it. Always keep in mind that with a couple of good friends, and a lot of motivation, high school will be one of the best experiences of your life. Your only here for four years. Be responsible, but also have fun.
Many students say they don't have time for extracurricular activities. Keep in mind that these activities can help both your social life and your college applications. When you start your search to find a college, you'll see that they are looking for well bounded individuals both academically and socially. The best colleges today have become highly competitive. They require people to be able to multi-task. Colleges want students to be active both in school and their community. As well as be
a part of the schools culture. That doesn't mean you should sign up for every activity out there, just try the ones that seem interesting to you at first. It's better to be dedicated and active in a few activities than to make little effort in several. Dedication, motivation, and having an open mind are key in high school.
One of the biggest mistakes students make in high school is doing social activities instead of their school work. BIG MISTAKE. Even though social activities are an important part of high school life, they shouldn't be your main focus during the week. Your focus in high school should be learning, preparing for college by taking challenging classes and preparing yourself for a future career. I might seem like a Debbie-downer right now, but it's the truth. You will have enough time to socialize with all of your friends on the weekends. If you manage your time correctly, it can be fun! Now let's talk about how friends can cause a distraction in classes because you chose the same subject.
Your friends may have different interests, academic skills and college goals than you do and that's ok. If you're interested in classes and your friends' aren't, take them. You just might make some new friends, and you'll be one step closer to getting into the college of your dreams. Again with the right group of friends and motivation you will go farther in life. SUCCESS IS KEY MY FRIENDS.
