later that night riley entered the studio again, only to find connor at the desk, staring intently down at the shuffled papers in front of him, his head being supported by the palm of his hands. with three cups of coffee beside him, it had still appeared like connor had been restless since shadows formed under his eyes, his hair a mess on his head from how many times he repeatedly ran his hands through it.
"connor..." riley whispered while approaching him at the desk, holding that same paper he found earlier that day.
"what do you want, riley," his voice drained of any emotion.
"you wrote this song about y/n, i didn't know..." he slid the paper under connor's view.
suddenly connor sprang up, "i thought i lost it," he looked down at the paper, with hopeful eyes. "that's why i was still sitting here."
"or is there another reason," riley hinted.
"that doesn't matter," connor tried to shrug off his comment.
"yes, connor, look. i know from the first time you saw y/n, you saw more in her than i could've in all the time i had to realize it. just go for her, i mean it, literally."
"wait, uh, now?" he said with a smile growing on his lips.
"now" riley nodded.
connor became more alert and noticeably energetic as he took his coat and phone in one hand. before leaving, he placed a meaningful hand on riley's shoulder, "thanks bro," he said with a smile.
meanwhile, you were still up at your house, just like connor had been at his. luckily, you were able to hear the knock on the door, since you were awake to hear it.
you open the door to reveal an eager blond haired and blue eyed guy looking back at you.
you let out a little gasp, "con–"
he then took one step forward as he took your face in his hands, and tilted his head upwards as he let his bottom lip touch yours first, bringing you in closer as he finally got the feel for your lips after so long. he had his thumbs graze across your skin before breaking the kiss to look at you.
"y/n i love you, i never stopped. i've been wanting to tell you that for the past few days, but they never were the right timing. i didn't want you to lose hope in me and what we had. and oh god, it's definitely still there." he took a deep breath after successfully stating those words in one breath, nodding at the last part.
"i never stopped loving you," your voice grew with emotion, your eyes watery from his oceanic eyes pouring into yours.
he took your upper body into his embrace, engulfing your shoulders with his arms. you wrap your arms around his lower back, laying your head on his chest and hearing his heartbeat pulsate thru his chest. yours being so close to his, your heart started beating to the same drum as his.
about a few months later after your late night encounter with connor at your house, you had heard familiar voices from your tv that made you stop in your tracks.
"hey guys, we're here at radio disney with before you exit! so tell me, what is the meaning of your new single, 'summer love'?"
the tv revealed the mcdonoughs all behind the same desk with microphones in front of each of them.
connor immediately took over this question as he leaned closer to his microphone.
"it's about a love that goes beyond the boundaries of a "summer fling" or a "one time thing." with "summer" it kinda represents the fun of it all but also the thrill of what it's like to fall in love." he paused. "but then the "heat" brings out the passion and, like, warm feeling. and even though the season doesn't last, the love is long-lasting."
"i'm jealous," riley spoke up, "i want to find a summer love one day," smiling towards the end.
"maybe this summer," toby chuckled.
