you sat just looking at the road ahead, watching the headlights pierce thru the darkness. you shift in your chair as you rest your hand on the arm rest.

"tired huh?" connor chuckled, not taking his eyes off the road.

you look at him, "a lil," then smiled.

"you could've spent the night at our house, y'know," he said taking one hand off the wheel, unconsciously placing a hand on yours.

you looked down at his hand before answering, "i know, but it's okay," you chuckled.

once he realized his hand was on yours, he quickly drew it back, afraid he had unintentionally made a move. in all honestly it felt right for him to do that, his hand fit so perfectly on top of yours he almost didn't feel it.

"sorry. it's a habit." he said rather flustered, noting the tinge of sadness in his voice.

after a silent moment, he had arrived in front of your house. "alright," he said as he stopped on the curb.

"thanks for the ride," you smile at him, letting it linger.

he smiled back before you turned to the car door.

"wait, um, y/n?" he placed a hand on your shoulder. You look to a concerned connor, his expression worrisome.

"yeah?" you look back & forth into his eyes, mimicking his expression.

"i just..." he started, but didn't finish. "have a good night," his tone changed.

connor watched you safely enter your house until you were inside. you closed the door behind you, taking a deep breath as you put your back to the door.

meanwhile, connor, alone in the car, hesitated to drive off.

"god, why didn't i just tell her," he whispered frustratingly, looking down as he assertively placed his hands on the wheel.

'what happened between me and connor?' you thought. 'we can barely get thru one conversation now w/o having it only be a few word exchange. when before, all we wanted to do was talk to each other.'

your thoughts were interrupted by the chime of your phone. the screen read "riley" as you look over the message:
