I begin with the Elites on the next day.
Ash walks me through the rules of being apart of their unique club.
1) Tell nobody about the Elites.
He stresses that to be the most important rule of all.
2) Lie to protect those you care about.Tobias stresses the latter as the most important rule, while Ash disagreed. Looking over his shoulder Ash hisses for Tobias to stop confusing me.
The boys share angry looks while Ash finishes up his explination.
“Rule Three is also important, maybe not as important as rules 1 and 2… but it’s still important to take it into consideration.”
“Alright.” I smile warily. Ash kicks up his feet onto Tobias’s bed. Tobias’s eyes slowly find their way to Ash’s mud covered sneakers, simultaneously his hands push them off his sheets.
Ash looks up at him and raises his eyebrows with a look of “What?” on his face.
“Rule Three,” he says still looking at Tobias, “trust no one.”I quirk a brow with a small smile on my lips. “So I can’t trust you?” I ask steadily.
Tobias looks back at Ash and shrugs.
“Not when the attack on Abnegation comes.” Tobias says.
“Well, I think you could trust us during that,” Ash replies shooting him a look. “She’ll need someone to trust,” Ash explains.
“We won’t know each other during the attack,” Tobias says ignoring him and looking at me. His face is stony but I can see the dread in his eyes by the way he pushes a hand through his freshly cut hair.
“Um… I’m your cousin. I don’t think I can just forget that.” I lean back against the wall.
It is early in the morning before anyone is awake. Ash says it would be good to talk with me before letting the Director know that I was part of the team. Whoever that is.
Tobias runs another hand through his hair and sighs loudly.
“Listen, when all this,” Tobias gestures his arms widely, “goes down under, it would be better if you didn’t know me.”“You need to protect yourself,” Ash says nodding. “To make this easier let me ask you this.”
He lowers his voice so I can barely hear him. I lean closer as he motions for me to do.
“I’m Jeanine.”
I snort at the prospect.
“I’ve heard about this group…” he says slowly. “They know what’s on the other side of the fence. They plan to foil all of our hard work… do you know anything about this group?”
“Ash, really is this--”
“Answer the question!”
“No! No I don’t know anything about a group who plans on destroying our three years of hard work! Are you happy now?” I shout. The blood vessel in my temple pulsating.
“Good…just try to act less suspicious when you say it.”
I roll my eyes.
“I’ll take it from here,” Tobias says quietly.
I smile at Tobias.
“If someone asks: Do you know anybody who is affiliated with this group, you would say?”
“What group?”
He smiles widely. “The Elites. Do you know anyone that could possibly be part of this group?”
“Not remotely,” I reply crossing my arms.
Tobias nods approvingly. “You sound good. But can you handle interrogation under physical abuse?”
“I did with Marcus didn’t I?”
A loud silence shatters the room. Ash decides it better to come up with some excuse of having to find Zeke and plan a time to go zip lining to avoid this conversation. As he leaves Tobias chooses to stare at the wall, his lips pursed tightly.
As the door shuts, his tight face loosenes and he sighs. “I love you, and that never was supposed to happen.”
I look up at him. His expression is a toss between pity and anger. Anger with the outcome and pity that I had to endure what he had to.
“I love you too and yes I did.”
He looks down blankly.
“I wouldn’t change what happened for anything.” I say softly. I pull myself up and go to sit next to him. I move my hand on top of his and squeeze his fingers. “I would go through all of it again, just for you Tobias. All for you.”
