Stereotypes in Edward Scissorhands
In Ann Devine's essay "Edward Scissorhands" she states that Edward Scissorhands, directed by Tim Burtons, is full of stereotypes. Devine is absolutely correct. Edward Scissorhands is full stereotypical characters.
In this movie, Tim Burton shows how the typical American is too ignorant to accept someone who is different. Devine says "that [the] American society is too sterile and narrow to cope with one who does not conform." The movie shows the horror of the way Edward is misled and treated. The movie, however, doesn't give a solution to this problem other than to run away. This shows that there are not many other options other than to run from the problem.
Edward Scissorhands contains many stereotypes, running from the slut to the clueless to the Gossip Queen. The fact that the setting is in a small town makes things even worse for Edward. In a small town, there are few people, and they are somewhat knitted together. In a small town there are less people to accept you, ideas tend to be the same, and those who think, act, and/or look differently stick out like a sore thumb.
Edward is a beautiful soul in a body labeled as ugly, and he is in a society filled with beautiful people with-mostly- seemingly ugly souls. It is very hard for Edward to excuse everyone else's actions without degrading himself.
One of the purposes of this story, either consciously laid or not, is that stereotypes are real. They come in different forms, but they are true. And they can be kind, but also can be detrimental.
In this story is the tale of a person who suffered from these stereotypes. The tale of a person who was wrongfully labeled as a monster. The tale of a horrible and disgusting truth that this "'Monster' is essentially more human than the apparently normal characters." This story tells of a being who is kind and innocent gets thrown into a corrupt society and is abused and defiled. The tale of how a being is brought up with kindly values, morals, and behaviors, is accidentally thrown into "a society whose values are as phoney as the cotton wool snow which Pete Boggs nails on his roof at Christmas time. "
It is the horrible truth that most people will not accept.
