I awoke the next morning on the couch to the sound of Michelle humming in the kitchen. It took a minute to make out what she was humming as my mind was still a little foggy from that concoction Danny gave me last night. Besides, I was in no hurry to move as she hummed "Crystal Blue Persuasion" and quietly rattled pots and pans; I had a perfect view of her heart shaped ass peeking from beneath my t-shirt.
The sun was shining through the blinds at a forty-five-degree angle and I could see the dust specks floating and glistening like bright ambassadors of morning. I felt so calm and mellow, I just wanted to soak in the moment, feeling the smile spread across my lips. Coffee was brewing, I heard the percolator perking away and the smell of bacon sizzling and blending with wisps of her perfume as she busied herself making us breakfast.
Was this, I thought, what being married would be like? I couldn't move, the moment was too delightful and I was in a sort of mesmerized state, maybe even bliss. With all the horror that had been inserted into our lives, this brief moment had tremendous value and I was holding on as long as I could. These little moments, I thought, may be the most precious of all.
Just then she turned to walk into the living room and I closed my eyes pretending to still be asleep. I don't know why I do this, somehow I felt like I might get caught at something. I drank in her intoxicating aroma in the subtle breeze that rolled over me like a wave as she walked into the other room. "Oh, I hope she doesn't get dressed yet," I thought.
When she came back out she sat next to me on the couch and ran her fingers through my hair. "Wake up sleepyhead, it's time for breakfast" and she kissed me on my forehead. I opened my eyes looking up to her soft glow and smiling eyes. For a moment, we just looked at each other, a sort of calm knowingness, a joining of spirits, "Yep", I thought, "It's these little moments."
Still, in my T-shirt and nothing else I ran my hand up her smooth thigh and pulled her close to me. My body had an immediate response and it was then I realized I slept in my clothes, the raging hardness held firm behind my Levi's Zipper.
"No no," She said, "Breakfast will get cold."
She kissed me quickly on the end of my nose and stood up, extending her hand to help me rise.
"But I have this little problem," I said glancing down to the bulge in my pants and back to her again.
"You'll get over it, maybe you need to take a piss, now go wash your hands and I'll set the table."
"OK mom," I snarked back.
"And brush your teeth, your breath is like a sewer."
So I did as I was told, did my best not to make a mess while peeing with a pogo stick, then went to the sink. On it was a brand new toothbrush with a sticky note that said, "Merrill my love and a hand drawn happy face." There was toothpaste next to it and when I looked up at the mirror she had written, "M&M forever," in red lipstick. While I thought it to be real junior high school, it was also very endearing. Such an odd combination she is, all grown up but still just a girl. I could still hear her humming away in the other room, but now it was, "Sweet Judy Blue Eyes," "at least we like the same music," I thought.
I went in and sat at the little table she had in the tiny dining area, the table against the wall under the window. The sun was a bit higher in the sky now and shined directly on the yellow Formica with two matching plates, glasses filled with more of the orange juice from last night, napkins with good silverware and a crystal vase with a single white rose she must have picked from in front of the motel. It was obvious she went to a lot of trouble and I was touched.
She came to the table with two cups of coffee already done the way I like it, set them down, took my plate and as she turned I had to tickle her cute little ass, she giggled and scurried away, looked back over her shoulder, gave me a wink and said.
"Over easy right?"
"yes mama, that's right."
While she did her thing I drank down the orange juice with the miners spice in it, courtesy of Michelle. "Ahhh!"
She brought our plates, set them on the table and took her place on the opposite side. She extended her left hand, I took it in my right.
'Should we say grace?" She asked, looking me in the eye.
I paused, I didn't want to spoil anything but it wasn't something I wanted to get in a habit of.
"What?" She asked
"Yes, please do" I answered.
She closed her eyes and bowed her head, I followed in respect and this is what she said,
"Father, we thank thee for the night, and for the pleasant morning light.
For rest and food and loving care, and all that makes the day so fair.
Help us to do the thing we should, to be to others kind and good,
In all we do, in all we say, to grow more loving every day.
Amen."
I said Amen with her and she said, "Dig in Sonny boy!"
'Thank you so much for this Michelle, it's so nice, I mean it's really so nice of you"
"Well, thanks for saying so, Merrill. I wanted to surprise you with something nice after the hellish night you had. You were sleeping so soundly after Danny gave you that elixir, I didn't want to disturb you. I hope you're not mad."
"Mad? How could I be mad," I said, "I slept like the dead and woke up to you being your wonderful self, how could I possibly be mad?
"Good, I just love you so much I never want to upset you. Oh, and Danny said to call him as soon as you woke up."
"I think that can wait till, after breakfast, I just want to sit here and enjoy this awesome moment with my favorite person in the whole world. I can't think of anywhere else I would rather be right now, it's these little moments that I have learned to live for. These little moments when love and goodness are a little magical and I just wish I could stop time. I love you so much Michelle, I know I'm just a kid but I got this feeling we were meant to be."
She just looked at me with eyes that seemed to enter my soul and smiled.
"It won't always be like this Merrill, we're moving awfully fast my dear. There are going to be trials ahead and we will be put to the test, but, I believe we can do this. I think we need to get this thing with Heather and Dale behind us before we make any big decisions; OK?"
"OK my dove, OK. Let's just have our breakfast in peace and enjoy each other company while everything is nice. By the way, where did you get that T-shirt babydoll?"
"From some guy,' She said, taking a drink of her coffee.
"Some guy huh? Damn these potatoes are good, what did you do to em?"
