dan's dad raised the bat.
phil squeezed his eyes shut.
he couldn't watch.
he had failed.
why did he think this could ever have worked.
it was all over.
and that's when he heard it.
sirens.
and that's when he saw it.
a bright light.
he heard chris exhale a breath and pj sank to his knees, and put his head in his hands.
"police," the man with the bat muttered, "which one of you little shits called the coppers?"
phil looked at chris and pj.
they looked as confused as he felt and phil knew what that meant:
none of them had.
so who did.
there was a loud crash and the thundering of boots and soon five policemen stood before them, wearing black uniform and holding guns.
dan's dad put his hands in the air, dropping the bat as he did so, and was frogmarched outside.
pj and chris ran after him, leaving phil to coax dan up, gently.
he was shaking and crying, but his brown eyes were bright.
as the four boys stood outside, watching the group of men being stuffed into police cars, chris spoke up.
"okay," his voice was quiet, "what the hell just happened?"
"who called them?" phil wondered, his arm around dan's shoulder.
"i did," a voice behind them said.
dan looked up and when he saw the boy standing there, looking concerned, he inhaled sharply.
"nate?"
phil looked at the boy.
he was tall with curly brown hair and blue eyes.
so this was nate.
suddenly, there was a yell of anger and shouts of concern.
they spun around to see dan's dad pull out a gun and shoot
once
twice
three times
before being hit round the head by a policeman and collapsing.
phil looked around him and exhaled.
dan, chris, pj and himself were fine.
but then he heard a soft cry behind him and saw dan's face lose its colour; phil didn't need to turn around to know that nate had been shot.
