Later that evening I called mum to tell her the amazing news.

"Mum, Luke proposed!"

"Who's Luke Jaimie??"

"The boy I've been dating for 2 years! He's finally proposed!"

"Jaimie are you ok?"

"Yes mum, why wouldn't I be?"

"No reason, just checking. Congratulations!"

Mum hung up. I was disturbed by her reaction. Was she not happy for me? I left the phone on the side and went upstairs where Luke was. He was positioned on the edge of his bed- head in lap.

"You OK?"

His head rose leisurely. His eyes had lost their sparkle, they were dull and colourless.

"My dad... He just... Um... He didn't seem content when I told him I proposed to you."

"That's funny..."

"Huh?"

"Well, I just got off the phone to my mum and she seemed inconsolable towards me."

"Hmmmm."

Our sorrowful eyes locked each others. We both faced the same problem. Neither of our parents seemed happy about this event.

I perched myself next to Luke and wrapped my arms around him. His head focused on me, as did his eyes. Hands sifted over my face and body. I caught his hand and lead it to mine. Our lips met in one sweet rush. Then things became a blur...

The next morning I awaken to find the duvet ruffled and pillows spread on the ground. I swivel round to discover Luke laying next to me. He unrolled his eyes and beamed at me.

"Well, I wasn't expecting that..." He chuckled.

"Expecting what?" I had no idea or not record of what he was talking about.

"Nothing." He replied.

My legs carried me out of the room and into a small, bright little bathroom. I turned the tap and was about to run my hands under the cool water when I caught sight of the ring. I'm Luke's fiancé- I was going to be Luke's wife... A smile chiseled itself into my face and remained there for the durance of the day.

After spending breakfeast with Luke I went home. I hadn't really spent any time with my family since when I first met Luke.

A familiar face greeted me at the door.

"J!!!!!"

Maddie clung to me and pulled me inside the house.

"Hi Maddie. I take it you missed me then!"

We both laughed with delight and embraced in a hug. Footsteps came softly down the stairs. Mum. She was dressed in a velvet rope that draped around her thin shoulders. Her feet were enclosed in white slippers.

"Hi Mum."

"Hey Jaimie. Maddie can you go and put the kettle on for mummy. J and I need to talk."

"Ok." Maddie ran down the hall into the kitchen.

Mum's eyes fixed onto me. There was a sense of tension in the air.

"So, how have you been Jaimie?"

"Good. Why you asking mum?"

"Jaimie. About Luke you..."

"Mum don't say it. If you don't approve of Luke you should at least be civil with him. "

"Jaimie. That's not what I was going to say. Luke isn't..."

Maddie darted to mum and me with 2 cups of teas.

"There you go!"

"Thanks Maddie."

We both took our tea. I looked up at mum.

"Anyway, Jaimie the thing is..."

The sound of a telephone interrupted us yet again. I shot up and answered it.

"Jaimie is that you?"

"Yes, who's this?"

"It's me Luke. I'm at the hospital. I've been in an accident can you come up?"

I dropped the phone and sprinted to the door.

Luke.
