Tears started to well up in my eyes. Real ones this time. I couldn't believe it.
"S- Sarah?" My voice stammered.
The eyes stared deep into mines.
"Audrey? Is that seriously you?" The body called.
"I'm dreaming. This can't be happening. You're dead. They buried you," I whispered firmly.
"No. No. That wasn't me. Someone else was in the forest with us. Her face was disfigured but she nearly looked like me. But it weren't me. I escaped and hid in that shack. I had my camera and tried to take pictures of the monster. It’s scared of bright lights Audrey," she explained.
Chaise:
I stood there, staring at the thing that lay in the hospital bed. No way. Sarah McKenzie is dead.
Audrey turned around to me. "Chaise. Are you seeing this right now? Or is it just me?"
I kept my eyes on the thing as it made eye contact with me. Its expression change into a smile. A deadly, evil smile. Its eyes rolled back and were replaced with empty ones.
"Audrey, let's go," I demanded.
"What? Why?" She asked confusingly. "It's Sarah, Chaise. Look at me."
I found it difficult to take my eyes off of it but I managed to look at her. She was looking at me with concern, as if searching for something. Audrey looked back at the thing in the bed. It went back to normal, as if nothing ever happened.
"I'm so happy you’re alive. When you banged your head, I tried to drag you but I couldn't so I hid you in some brushes. I made sure I covered every visible patch so 'it' wouldn't get or see you."
It was all lies. Every single word. The thing portraying to be Sarah started to cry. Audrey went over and comforted her. When Audrey couldn't see, the creature smiled at me. Showing its pointy, yellow teeth. My breathed started to become rapid. I began to clench my fists with anger and I punched the wall and walked out the room. I held my head in my hands as I walked up and down the corridor. I pulled out my sidekick and texted Audrey.
I'll be in the car waiting.
I walked out of the building and sat in my car. After a few seconds of sitting in silence, I went ballistic. I had to calm myself down before anything happened. I controlled my breathing to a slow pace. I needed to tell her. Damn, it’s going to break her. I thought.
I sat in the car waiting for half an hour. Figuring out what I was going to say to her. Audrey came walking down out the doors and towards the car. I watched her as she did so. She gave me a harsh expression and got in the car.
"What happened to you back there? That was my best friend an you totally ignored her," she said annoyed.
I shook my head. "Look, I'm sorry how I reacted but that... isn't Sarah." I tried not to make eye contact with her.
She looked confused. "What do you mean?"
"You wouldn't even believe me if I told you."
"Just say it."
Audrey:
I am so annoyed at this dude. Embrassing me like that. Argh. I could just reach over so simply and strangle his ass. Now he's taking so long to just say what he needs to say.
"That... thing you was talking to... that is pretending to be Sarah... is a soulshifter."
I laughed. "Don't be ridiculous."
I looked into his eyes and saw he was serious. There was no twitching. I stopped laughing.
"This is a joke, right? You actually believe that?"
"I don't have to believe because I know.
"Look, just take me home." I said without looking at him.
"Audrey, I-," he broke.
"Just take me home."
He stared at me for a while and I could feel his sorry eyes as he turned away an drove his car/ Nothing more was said between the journey from the hospital to my house.
