Dear Henry, life in Springfield is less than desirous. Fear not. My pittance of a salary doesn't allow me to deviate from your rules. No friends, no family. And certainly, no woman would find me, and my existence, enticing.

Abe climbed up the small ladder in the shop and started putting bags of flour and sugar away. The bell chimed indicating that somebody was coming inside of the store. He paid no mind to it and kept stocking the shelves.

"Excuse me," a woman's soft voice echoed through the small shop. "Excuse me, I'll be needing these." she said holding a small list and continued talking to Abe's back.

"Just one second, ma'am." Abe said holding up a finger and continued stocking.

The woman scoffed. "Well, you needn't call me ma'am, as if I'm some haggard spinster..." she said as she walked towards the door and continued muttering things.

"I'm sorry, ma'am!" Abe said quickly as he climbed over the counter and ended up in front of her. "Madam...I mean, miss." he swallowed. "I'm Abraham... Uh, Lincoln." his hand shot out.

"Mary Todd." she simply nodded ignoring the hand.

Suddenly the door opened and another man walked through.

"Darling. There you are. You mustn't flit from store to store so quickly." the man said glancing at Abe then walked towards Mary.

"Well, perhaps if you didn't stop to jaw with every gentleman in Springfield..." Mary began.

"I could say the same for you." the man said cutting Mary off then looked towards Abe as he stood there awkwardly. "Stephen Douglas. How do you do?" he gave Abe his hand.

"Abraham... Lincoln." he took Stephen's hand kindly.

Stephen eyed Abe then slowly smiled, "Are you a voting man, Mr. Lincoln?" Before Abe could answer Mary simply sighed heavily and rolled her eyes.

"I..." Abe trailed off then cleared his throat keeping his eyes on Mary the whole time.

"How do you feel about keeping slavery out of Illinois?" Stephen asked before Abe could answer. "I'm running for the legislature."

"I'm sure he'd love to hear your campaign speech," Mary started to say. "but Mr. Lincoln was just about to attend to my list." she looked at Abe. Abe nodded and attempted to take the list from Mary, but Stephen interrupted again.

"We were talking, dear." Stephen shot her a look then looked back at Abe. "Slavery, it's a complicated issue."

"I couldn't disagree with you more, Mr. Douglas." Abe finally said having room to talk. Stephen simply eyed Abe then glanced towards the door once it opened letting Speed walk through.

"Mr. Douglas, Miss Todd." Speed said taking Stephen's hand and shaking it. "You have met my new associate, Abraham. A letter came for you." he handed Abe a letter. Abe took the letter and he quickly walked back behind the counter opening it as quickly as possible. When he finally opened it, it read:

Dear Abe. Your prescription awaits you at the local pharmacy. Ask for Aaron Stibel, Junior.

As he read the letter Mary slowly walked towards him.

"Mr. Lincoln?" she asked softly.

Abe blinked as he was suddenly brought back to reality then looked towards Mary. "I'm so sorry." he chuckled nervously as he folded the letter back up. She simply smiled then handed him the list of things she needed.
