*****Camila's POV*****
"We hate to fear for the worst in situations like this, but all the signs are evident in this case." Everyone was sitting anxiously in the waiting area as the doctor tried to explain Dinah's diagnosis. "Dinah came here with headaches originally. That continued later on to very severe abdominal pain, and it only continued after the ambulance brought her to us. She has terrible nausea and a minor convulsion in our care. We've seen all these symptoms before; and unfortunately, no matter how the data comes out, it won't be good. We do, however, have a very good idea that I would like to present to you."
We had the entire ER waiting room filled. No one coming in stopped or paid us any attention. They were just immediately taken to a room. I don't think anyone knew what to do right now. We were all too scared to interrupt the doctor or ask too many questions. "We've narrowed it down to what we like to call HELLP." We just sat in silence, but no one wanted ask anymore. I didn't want to know, but I needed to. "Tell us what it means. I'm ready...we're ready, to hear."
"HELLP stands for hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count. Hemolysis is the breakdown of red blood cells. Elevated liver enzymes play a role in overall liver function. Low platelet count has to do with proper blood clotting. Having HELLP puts the body under extreme stress and can cause the following: Visual disturbances, high blood pressure, protein in urine, edema (swelling), severe headaches, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, fatigue, and bleeding. Dinah is suffering from this disease in a very high degree. If it continues to get any worse...she could possibly die. And if she does, she'll be taking the baby with her."
It was a lot to take in to know that my girlfriend could die here. I wasn't going to let her go that easy. Either of them. "What can we do" I ask. He looked over to me. "What can I do?" "Dinah needs a blood transfusion as soon as possible. Anyone that would like t-." I stood up, "Let's go, right now". He looked around for any objections. "Okay, Ms..." he trailed off. "Cabello, Camila Cabello." And so my day went on. Blood test. Watching them remove pints of fluid from my body. Then a bed next to Dinah, where I would eat and relax until I felt replenished from the blood loss. She slept for most of the day, and I didn't leave her side until she woke up. Everyone agreed that I would be the one who would have to tell her.
I just hope she takes it okay.
*****Dinah's POV*****
I woke up to a white room, with Camils sitting beside me. "Hey baby" I croak out, holding her hand. Her eyes light up when she sees I'm awake. "Dinah!" She moves from her bed slowly, pulling her machine with her. Wait...why was she in a bed? And why is she hooked to an IV? What the hell happened?
"Mila. What's going on? Where am I?" She moved over quicker, cupping my face in an attempt to try and keep me calm. "Shh. You gotta relax baby girl. We don't wanna hurt the baby, right?" I just nod softly and lean over for a kiss. She smiles and pecks my lips, making me smile with her. "I'm so glad you're okay. I thought I was gonna lose you. You two scared the shit out of me."
I know today was hard, but I still had no idea what happened. "Mila, I was in a lot of pain when we left" I started. "Yeah. It seemed excruciating. You just... Wouldn't stop screaming. And the crying. Oh my god, I.... I didn't know what to do. If it hadn't been for Ally, you could h-." I pulled her closer to me, wrapping my arms around her neck. "Hey. I'm here, and we're both okay. It's all over."
She suddenly got really tense, and I knew something was wrong. "It's all over, right Karla?" I could see he fear in her eyes. Whenever I've asked her questions with her real first name, she knew I was serious. "That's the thing Dinah; It's not all over" she said, playing with my fingers.
I could tell this was hard for her. She couldn't even make eye contact with me. "Mila. Please tell me what's going on? No more secrets, okay?" She looked up immediately after I said that. "Dinah, you're sick. And it's hurting you and the baby real bad." I could already feel tears welling up in my eyes, but I held them down. "You have a disease that effects the breakdown of ur blood cells, your liver function, and blood clotting. It could cause strokes, fluid to fill the lungs, the placenta to separate from the baby before their born. This could possibly kill you and our baby."
She just said a lot, and I only caught the bad. Kill. That's all I caught. "Hey" she said as she grabbed my hand, "We can treat this". "H-how?" "I'm giving blood for the transfusion, and then we have you on bed rest until you give birth. Medication will help maintain the body function. And then we just wait as long as we can until you can give birth. We will do everything in our power to save you both."
I don't know when I started crying during her speech. All I know is that I balled when she was done. "I-I'm scared M-mila" I cried into her chest. This had to be at least hour two of my nonstop tears. Her shirt was soaked all the way through. "I know, baby. It'll be okay. I'm not gonna let anything happen to you."
I had Camila stay with me that night. She laid down and held me while I rested my head on her shoulder. She hummed softly to me, stroking my hair and keeping me calm. "I love you" I whispered quietly as the sleep started to overtake my body. I honestly thought I was just tired, but I guess it was more. I knew that the minute I felt my nose dripping. "Mila" I started, blood on my fingers. "Hey hey hey, you need to calm down. It'll be fine. I'm getting the doctor."
She shot out of bed, pressing the button and then going back out the door. A few minutes later, doctors came in with medicine for me to take and new sheets and a gown for me to change in to. "This magnesium should help the clotting and you should be able to get some rest, Miss Hansen. We're so sorry for the inconvenience." I just smiled and let them go after I took my medication.
"You okay, baby" Mila asked, kissing my forehead. "Really babe" I started changing my clothes, "I'm gonna be alright". "Are you sure? I can help you-." I grabbed her face in my hands, making sure she looked at me. "I. Am. Fine. Now please, let's just sleep okay?" She nodded and leaned forward, kissing me softly. "Mmm, you're amazing."
"I love you too, Dinah."
