I rushed out to our old wooden barn on that Cold winter morning. Our white Brood mare had been pregnant by my moms finest stallion, Royal Pride. Champion Barrel racer of my moms. 2x World NBHA Champion, though he was retired, he sure did make a great lawn ornament.
I slid open the big, faded red painted door, closed the big, heavy door behind me, and rushed over to the Birthing stall.
Buddahs Devine ( Phyper, the brood mare ) standing up and the gorgeous black foal that stood behind her, on her left side, searching for his first meal underneath her stomach.
Vet Wence Tory and my mother grinning ear to ear at the sight of the beautiful newborn. My mother turned to me, " Kaci, come here darling."
I unlatched the stall door and it swung open. I then closed it behind me.
" Its a colt, baby. " She smiled at me.
" Hes a beauty too, looks just like his sire, Grace. " Dr. Tory said to my mother.
" Hes beautiful. " I said quietly.
" That he is, Kaci. " Tory said to me.
My mother wrapped her arm around me and pulled me close to her on the hay bale that sat in the Birthing stall. It seemed that we had been there for hours. I was mesmerized by the colt, his mother licking him clean, and his tiny newborn legs that held him up.
" Alright doc. Thanks so much for coming out. " My mother said walking Vet. Tory out the door.
" My pleasure Grace, cant wait to see what great things that colt will be able to do when hes grown. " He tipped the front of his hat and walked out the door after my mother handed him a check. My mother walked back over to the stall, her arms on the rim on the door,
" Alright kiddo, i think its time we 'oughta get you to school, huh?" She glanced down at me.
" Mom, cant i stay home today? Please. " I smiled up at her.
She laughed, " No Kaci May, you always say that, then you ask the next day as well. Come on. How 'bout this little lady. I take you to school today, you can tell all your friends about the new colt. Then you can come home and see him, Brush 'em up and make him pretty. " She said to me with a smile.
" Alrighty, I guess! " I got up and began to walk towards the door. My mother opened the stall door for me and i went trotted out like a happy little pony with my pig tails flopping back and forth.
" well hang on there, little lady. " I stopped and turned around.
" Whatcha gonna name him?" she smiled and leaned up against the stall door. I was quite shocked that my mother had asked me to name this colt, believe she knew how highly i thought of the little boy.
I had to think for a minute, a horses name is usually combined with his parents.
' Royal Pride and Buddhas Devine. '
mmmmm
" Buddha on Pride, Buddha for short. " i gave her a smirk.
" Thats a perfect name. " She smiled and i walked out the door.
That whole day at school i couldnt help but think about Buddha. Usually i could care less about the foals, we have an average of 6-10 every year. But there was something special about Buddha. I caught myself dozing off in class, but i guess my teacher figured that out long before i did. Along with the rest of the class. I look up as Mrs. Clotts called my name.
The whole class was looking at me, " Ms. Oz Follder, would you like to share with the class what you are doing in your notebook?" For the record, I was just doodling Buddha in my notebook, lady - is what i was thinking but I shook my head instead.
" I think you better young lady, stand up in front of the class and share. "
My heart stopped as i was a rather shy kid at most but when it comes to my horses; not really.
" My white brood mare gave birth to a black baby colt this morning. " i said with confidence as i stood in front of the class other than a few bratty girls that decided to giggle.
No one said a thing, so i just sat down.
" Whats its name, Kaci? " said one of the boys behind me.
Ehh, boys.
" Whats it to ya? " i asked with an attitude.
" Oh sorry, I was just curious. " He sat back in his seat.
" HIS name is Buddha. " I turned my head and whispered, really letting the his stand out, as Buddha was not an it.
I could see out of the corner of my eye that he was smiling. I then went back to my doodling, as my school work was not on my mind at that particular moment. I let my mind doze for the rest of that school day, letting the thoughts run through my mind about the day i would sit on Buddha and ride him. what a great day that will be.
And that day, i will be free.
