- Melli Xu
It wasn't that blue outside. The streets still had their lamps on and there was a few cars on the road. That is until I reach the main road. It will be packed with traffic even if it's only 4:00am, which also means I've got to make sure that I won't be late for my interview. I make my way to the main road but quickly covered my bag from wind that is caused by the cars driving by. I cross the road and enter the TV reports building. It's really big because all the different types of TV Channel reports team work here and I was going to become one of them, hopefully.
I walk to the from desk and wait for the lady at the desk to call me up. She looked up from her computer and smiled at me to come forward. "Hello. I'm here to have an pre-booked appointment with Mr. Gunn." I reply smiling. I have a good feeling about this appointment. She nodded and went back to her screen. Around me, people were wearing business clothes walking hurriedly around with files and papers tucked under their hands. It was... Busy.
"Just take a seat in the waiting room. Someone will come up to you when Mr. Gunn is ready." She said returning to her work.
"Thank you." I walk to the corner with a sofa and chairs. There was already two or three people sitting and I joined them. I smile at the man that looked up and bowed my head.
It has been almost two hours and no one has come up to get me. The man next to me was called up a few minutes and I was getting hungry. To stop that from happening, I turned on my music while I waited. My favourite song 'dope' by the awesome BTS started as I tapped on the sofa to the rhythm. Just as I was on the edge of giving up and lady walked in. "Melli Xu?" She asked me. I nodded my head back and forth while taking out my earphones. She smiled. "Hello, I'm Mr. Gunn's personal assistant. Mr. Gunn is ready to meet you." I greeted her as well and followed her through the building until we came to an end in front of an elevator. She pressed on the button in front and we waited for the lift.
A few minutes later, I was walking behind the PA to Mr. Gunn's office. She knocked on the only door on the floor three times and entered the room. Personally I would have said something embarrassing but I held the 'wow' from coming out of my mouth. I slowing followed the lady through the sofa and the expensive looking TV.
"Mr. Gunn's, your 6:00 appointment is here." I was a little taken back by the way she introduced me but I kept quiet. As the view of the table came I saw the man sitting on the comfy chair looking down at his papers. The room was decorated with silk curtains that shined from the lights around the room.
"Come in." He said looking up. I bowed in greeting as I walked forward. He told me to sit and I did as we were left alone to start. "So... Miss. Xu. What is it that you were looking for?" He asked politely.
"Sorry to disturb you Mr. Gunn but I've been looking for a job for a while and I heard you were looking for a new reporter. I really need this job to pay my house rent. So I was thinking... If you could... Let me join." I tried to sound confident as much as I can but inside, I was really nervous. He looked down at the papers in front of him and them looked back at me.
"You have been rejected from many companies. And you're only 20." He said blankly. I tried to be calm, this has happened before. The cola company I went to for an appointment also asked me the same question. They said that they couldn't take me in for company reasons. Please tell me they are not working with the cola company. I really need this job. "Sorry Miss. Xu but we can't take you in. We need someone with good background. You have failed your high school in US and have been rejected many times by other companies. If someone finds out this and knows that you work here, it will be a bad influence."
My mouth was hung open as I try to take in what the man has said. He just said that straight to my face. "Sorry sir, but I really need this job. Please, just help me out. I will try my best, I promise. I know how to speak English clearly as well." I started to get up from my seat trying to get closer to him so he could hear me better but he ignored me. He called the security which I didn't know where they came from but they took me away. I was on the edge of crying. How could he not see the fact that I was desperate! Argh!
