(THREE MONTHS???? I'm so sorry my dear readers. I have been terribly depressed. But I give you this in hopes you'll like it. I'm sorry it's unedited. But hope you like it!)
"I gotta say, seeing you is like seeing a ghost."
Merman chuckled as I just stared up at him. Merman. My best friend. The friend who is currently...at the second rank? I haven't seen the man in... months and the first thing I blurted was. "Nice suit."
"We thought you were dead in that train wreck..." Merman had been saying before he looked down at his diver's suit. "Yeah its nice, isn't it. I call it my supersuit. I got promoted!" He laughed, pointing to the badge with an Alaskan Ice dragon roaring to the sky. It was quite impressive.
But his suit was even better. It was like a Spiderman suit in material, showing off his toned muscle and long legs. It was black, with yellow striped running down his side like a racecar. He looked slick, I couldn't deny it.
Something in me tinged in jealousy. Here he was, on top of his game, a dragonrider on a mission with this really cool suit and everything. And what was I? Rebels are only cool in high school and Star Wars. But being a rebel to the American government. That's being a traitor. And traitors are never cool. Suddenly I had a homesick feeling for S-11, but I swallowed it. They had sent me to the wolves. To get killed. Over a stupid bird. I finally found my voice again. "Wow... congrats man," I said seriously, looking up at him with a small smile.
"But seriously." He crouched by me. "Where have you been, man? Dustin, Avery and I were a mess after we thought you died. They'll be so excited to find-"
My heart lifted at the thought of my friends actually missing me. I was tempted to ask if Avery cried, but that wasn't important at the moment. "No." I said, remembering Darius' warning. "You can't tell them I'm alive."
His expression fell to deadpan. "Why not?" He asked suspiciously.
"Because I can't go back to S-11. They'll just send me back to the wolves."
He nodded in understanding but still managed to say. "Justin... we wouldn't turn you in... you know that right? We're your friends..."
"I know," I said quickly. "But I might never be able to see them again. I don't want them to miss me." How heroic I sounded. I could tell by the small curl in Merman's lips that I was being a tad too dramatic.
"Alright, man," Merman said. "I'm on duty making sure that no suspicious characters cross the river. Promise me you'll come back here a few times?"
"Promise," I smiled. That one I could keep. "I miss you, man."
"I miss you too. And Larissa missed Caedmon a lot too." He looked beyond me and began to laugh. "Look, they're already catching up." He pointed.
I looked over and chuckled. I could see Caedmon peering into the water, his ears flicking forwards. "Larissa is huge." Was all I could say as an elegant head emerged from the water.
"Yeah. That's part of the reason I upgraded," Merman said proudly. "No one knew she'd get this big, and she's still growing."
I'd say that Larissa was about the size of a large horse, with a slender head like that of a seahorse. Her stripes and flashy fins made her seem like a princess among dragons. Caedmon stepped back, a little cautious about the highly poisonous water dragon. On her back was a slim saddle with a horn for Merman to grip onto when she put on a burst of speed. "She's g-"
I blinked and looked to my shoulder. A needle. What? Where...
"I'm sorry Justin." Was the last thing I heard before I fell. But not before I saw Larissa grab Caedmon by the neck and pull him savagely underwater.
