Scared Dan

Dan tried to suppress a scream as a black haired girl climbed out of the well, crawled towards the man in the movie, and came through his television screen. He'd watched The Ring numerous times, but it always scared him the same.

Especially since he was alone in the dark.

"Why did you have to watch it alone, Dan?!" Dan mumbled to himself. He turned the sound off of the movie and sat there, continuing to watch it while covering one of his eyes with a couch pillow. If Phil was here, watching this would be much easier. He knew what parts scared Dan, and he would silently move closer to Dan when these came, comforting him with his very presence.

Another part in the movie frightened Dan more than the first. He screamed, probably waking the neighbors, and ran to his bedroom, slamming the door behind him.

His room wasn't as comforting as he thought it would be. Strange shadows and lights seemed to be coming from the windows, illuminating his room in an eerie glow. His senses were on high-alert; every creak in the flat above him or whistle of the wind outside was enough to make him nearly jump out of his skin.

Not knowing what else to do, Dan grabbed his laptop. He opened Skype, and typed Phil's number, hoping against hope that he would soon see his best friend's face on the other end.

No answer.

Dan swore, and threw the laptop in front of him on his bed. He didn't blame Phil; he's obviously going to be busy on his holiday.

Dan figured a hot shower might calm him down, and headed to the bathroom. He walked into the tiled space and looked in the mirror. Bad idea. His subconscious apparently created something that wasn't there; he could've sworn he saw Samara in the reflection behind him.

Dan again ran to his bedroom, and closed the door. Back on his bed, breathless, he heard his laptop making a noise.

Phil was calling back!

Dan answered the call, and saw Phil's smiling face looking back at him. Upon seeing Dan's flustered and scared expression, Phil spoke. "Dan! Are you okay? What's wrong?"

Dan tried to calm himself down. "No, nothing, Phil, I'm fine." he was embarrassed about being scared over a silly movie, and decided to just play it cool.

Phil saw right through his act. "Dan, you have to tell me what's wrong, okay? Don't hide anything."

Dan sighed loudly, and gave in. "I decided to watch The Ring. I figured since I'd seen it so much I could watch it without you being here. But I was wrong, and now I'm terrified to step out of my bedroom. In fact, I'm a bit afraid of my bedroom too," Dan was rambling, looking around with a paranoid look in his eyes.

Phil's deep voice was very comforting, Dan realized, as he spoke. "Dan. Look at me. Daniel." Dan did as instructed.

"There's nothing there, okay? Look around you; really look. There's nobody there, right?"

Dan had a careful look around his room and realized Phil was right. He nodded.

"It's only a movie, with actors who are doing fake things to earn money. There's no truth behind it, okay?"

Dan nodded again, his heartbeat slowing down to normal. "Phil, tell me about your day," he said softly.

Phil smiled slightly. "Well, first of all, I miss you. A lot." Dan blushed. "But today I went to Palm Springs beach in Florida, and it was loads of fun. There was..."

Phil explained all that had happened on that day, and Dan listened, smiling the entire time. He began to doze off, listening to the sound of Phil's voice. Phil had ran out of things to say a while ago, and instead was saying things like "...and there were these huge Guinea pig-dinosaur hybrids who tried to eat everyone...", because he knew Dan wasn't listening to the story anymore. He spoke nonsensically for about an hour more, until he was sure Dan was asleep, and then hung up.

Phil called Dan again in the morning, to make sure he was okay.

"Yeah, I'm so much better, thank you," Dan said to his webcam.

"Alright, well, I'm headed home now--"

"Phil, before you go..."

"Yeah?"

"Guinea pig-dinosaur hybrids? Really?"

"You were still listening?" Phil asked, surprised.

"I always listen," Dan replied with a blush. He then ended the Skype call and awaited Phil's return.
