Phil jumped up as soon as he heard a knock on the door. "Dan?" he called out.

"Phil," a voice answered quietly. Phil opened the door, soon becoming face-to-face with Dan. The younger boy exhibited soft curls, brown eyes, and a timid smile as he stood in Phil's doorway. He clutched a black messenger bag in his arms.

"Can I come in?" Dan asked sheepishly.

"Of course," Phil answered. He stepped aside to let Dan enter his apartment. "Sorry for the mess," he said.

Dan, dressed in black skinny jeans and a black hoodie, glanced around at his surroundings. The green painted walls, band posters, and various video game consoles scattered across the apartment reminded Dan of his own bedroom, his only comfort back at his home.

"It's a good mess," Dan said quietly, nodding slightly to himself.

"Well, that's good," Phil said, laughing a bit. "My room is down the hall and to the left. You can put your bag there, if you like. Do you want popcorn?"

Dan smiled a bit more. "Yeah, if you don't mind."

Phil walked into the kitchen adjacent to the living room while Dan wandered down the short hallway to Phil's room. He pushed open the door, and Phil heard him sigh slightly.

As the popcorn popped in the microwave, Dan reappeared. "I really like your room."

"You do?"

"Yeah. I like this whole apartment. Thanks for letting me stay, by the way." Dan said, blushing slightly.

"No problem at all," Phil said nonchalantly, pouring the slightly overcooked popcorn into a big bowl. He headed back down to sit on his couch. Dan sat beside him, leaving just enough room for the popcorn bowl to be placed between them. They both started eating it, having only a couple pieces at a time.

Phil finally broke the awkward silence. "So...do you wanna talk about...?"

Dan paused for a moment. He then grabbed a pillow from the couch to cuddle while he spoke. "My dad said it was unacceptable for a homosexual to live under his roof. He said it was sick, and sinful, and that I needed to change my "lifestyle" before I came back home."

Phil frowned. "Your mum?"

"She agreed. Didn't say much though," Dan said. He was trying to hold in tears. "I guess I figured they didn't really like me, anyway. Adrian's younger but he's always been better..."

Phil put a hand on Dan's arm. "Dan, you're not worthless," he said. "I haven't known you for long, and you seem absolutely wonderful. Please, just because you have parents that can't accept you for who you are, don't think it makes you any less of a person."

Dan smiled. He placed a hand on top of Phil's. Phil noticed it was shaking. "Thanks, Phil."

"Don't thank me. It's true," Phil said, cheerful as ever.

"What about you?" Dan asked.

"What about me?"

"Your...story."

Phil shrugged. "Well, I was 15 when I came out, and my mum and dad were a bit disappointed, but Martyn was straight, so I guess they didn't mind having one screwed up kid."

Dan sat up. "Wait. Your parents were homophobic too?"

"They tried to hide it, but yeah." Phil answered. "I could see how disappointed they looked whenever I talked about fancying a guy. That's why I moved out the day after I turned 18."

Dan nodded slightly, biting his lip. "I'm sorry about your parents," he said after a while.

"It's okay. I'm sorry about yours."

"No, it's alright. They'll understand one day. For now, we have each other." Dan said, finally smiling a genuine smile. Phil couldn't help but smile back.

"You can stay here as long as you want, by the way." Phil said.

Dan smiled gratefully. "I never thought I would meet someone like you."
