(Hidayah Ali)
I hear the doorbell ring, and stay put, expecting either Raafiah or mum to answer it, since I'm playing a very important game of 'Temple Run' on her phone. You need a lot of concentration for this. And I can't afford to lose it right now, as I'm this close to making another high score. "Hidayah! Go get the door," my mum calls me from downstairs. And just then, I crash my head into the wall of a tunnel. In the game. Crap! There goes my high score.
Humphh!! Why me? "Raafiah, go and see who it is," I command my sis instead. "Didn't you hear mum? And as much as I love you, sweetheart, I'm not going to do your bidding," she counters tersely. "Okay, suit yourself. But in case you're forgetting, the last time she asked you to do something, I had to do it for you." So there!
"Besides, I'm the only one who has to run around and open doors all the time. Why shouldn't it be you for a change?" I keep on arguing, and the bell rings again as the person gets impatient. "Isn't any of you going to move your lazy butts and get the door?!" mum yells angrily from the kitchen in her screechy voice. "I'm busy here!"
"Raafiah!" The girl groans loudly, and I do a small victory dance in my head. But when she's gone, I can't help feeling guilty. What the hell!! She is lazier than me. Why should I keep dragging my a** around at everyone's beck and call? My legs need some rest too. "You're such a turd, Hadi!" I hear Samira suddenly voice her beautiful opinions about me, as she eyes me from behind her glasses. "Glad you think so," I retort bitterly, sticking out my tongue at her. She's curled up on my bed, reading the new issue of 'Tinkle digest' I just bought, and shakes her head at my childishness.
"Why didn't you get the door if you feel so sympathetic towards her?" She's about to answer me when my sister pokes her head inside to say that Sammy's brother has come to take her home. What?! "So soon?" I ask, pouting my lips in disappointment. "Can't she stay?" I try once more. "Hidayah, don't start whining. You know she can't. Her brother's here! Would you send him back without her?" "No. But we can send him with you instead," I tell her, wiggling my eyebrows suggestively.
"After we get you two secretly married, that is," Samira adds, coming towards me and winding her arms around my neck. At least on this one, she's with me. "Shut up, you two!" Raafiah glares at us, but her rosy cheeks give her away. The thing is, the two of them like each other.
Samira's elder brother saw Raafiah at a wedding. He'd gone crazy about a girl he'd supposed he'd never see again, according to him. And he kept telling Sammy about her for days. Turns out, that wonderful girl was my dorky sis all along. Who would've thought? He seriously needed to get his eyes checked.
Whenever he happened to take a look at her, the two of them blushed red, and hastily looked away. If there hadn't been a silly sister involved, I would've swooned like an idiot. But, since that wasn't the case, I just satisfied myself with teasing her day in and day out. And that was when I realized, not only did she like him back, she'd had a crush on him ever since Sammy had been my bestie. That is to say... since forever. So, naturally, we decided to play match-makers.
