It was raining and the alley was cluttered with piles of dead water, as well as dead bodies. The street smells dead, and again, the same eyes stare at me as I make my way to the Outside. The Outside is clean; reminds me of my family's mansion. The sidewalk is neatly paved, and there was no litter other than the tiny pile of rain water building up near the storm drain. The sound of water splashing against the sidewalk, as well as the sound of nearby cars passing makes me feel comforted and away from the smelly dumps. No one was outside, considering the fact that it was two in the morning.
But inching closer and closer was the sound of a police car, driven by two Normals. I quickly dash to an alley next to a building and hiding behind the walls, I snuck a glance at the people getting out of the car. There was a person covered in scars and with an eyepatch that emerged into view. Standing next to him was a guy with a menacing glare and on his hip strapped a katana sheath. Around his neck was a tag, and it not mistaken, it says: A/0. Tier A, second to most elite class of Tags. This guy's on a whole other level.
Knowing that I don't stand a chance against these two, I quickly fled away towards the deeper end of the alley. It was dark so I can't see when I tripped on something and fell into the water-filled pile of trash. My face hit something metal-like and I groan in pain as I brought my hand to my forehead. Pain shot up from my eyes through my skull. My hand throbs and when I look back down at my hand, it was smeared with blood.
"Well, fu--" I was cut off when I quickly dodged what was coming, for I felt a presence behind me. The guy's punch missed me and when I turned around, there was this big, bulky guy with dark skin glaring at me like I'm nothing to him.
"Um...do I know you?" I asked.
"I've never seen you around here." The guy replied in a deep voice.
"And neither have I." I replied. He looked enraged, and just as he's about to punch me, I dashed towards him, dodged his punch and jumped over his roundhouse kick as a follow up. As my mentor had told me, whenever engaging in close combat, my top priority is the stay on the ddegends so you don't reveal any weaknesses to your enemy. So I dodged his next attack until he runs out of stamina. That's when I fight. I kicked his left thigh when I got an opening to knock him off balance and when he faltered, I charge towards him so that we were at a proximity so close that I could feel his breath, and at that moment, I raised my fist back and brought it down with such force that I feel his cheekbone crack under my knuckles and that's when I know...overkill.
He flew back from my punch and landed right against the wall of the other side of the alley. I whistled in surprise at my own strength; I didn't even take Celebrer today. I pat my forehead to remove the blood stain and before I turn around to head deeper into the alley, I heard clapping. Applause, more likely. I turned around and saw the A/0 Tag along with that Normal.
Shit. They found me.
"Whooo! That punch was packed!" The Normal grins. He had pale blonde hair and a luminous blue eye, that of an ocean. His other eye was covered with his eye-patch. The A/0 Tag stood next to him and glared at me, as if studying me.
"What do you want?" I mumbled, gripping onto the hilt of my handgun under my sleeve.
"Nothing. Just thought we saw a stray dog running towards here; came to take a look." Eyepatch replied. By "stray dog" he most likely means me.
"And? Are you still chasing him now?" I asked, deciding to play along.
"Unfortunately, he's cornered." His mouth curls into a smirk.
"So what's the deal?" I asked, sighing. I guess there's no way out of this.
"Fortunately, you just happened to be the type of guy we're looking for." He replied. His eyes flickered and the ocean color was gone, but into a deep grey. "You were a foot soldier in the military, were you not?"
My eyes widened in surprise. "How did you know?"
"Just consider me...observant." He said slowly. "Now here's the deal...heard of the Big Three?"
"Get to the point."
"Well, this'll make things easier, since you already know." He said with a hint of relief in his voice. He nudges the A/0 rank on the shoulder, and as if he understood, he pulled out a black case. Eyepatch grabbed hold onto it, opened it, and inside, there was a necklace--no... it was a tag. It looked new with it's glimmering chain and silver plaque. Nothing, as far as I can tell, was inscribed onto the plaque. "We want to adopt the cornered dog."
Adopt? As in... "You want me to work as a Tag?" I asked. "...forcing me too, correct?"
"Mmhm." He nods. "This way, you can stop living in this trash and experience the thrill of real combat."
"Real combat?" I said. "There's already enough thrill in my fights. No thanks."
He chuckles. "Is that right? Well then, my bad for prying." Then, I don't know if I'm seeing this or what, but hie eyes suddenly changed into a more menacing glare which made my heart skip a beat. His face suddenly became serious. He looked me directly in the eyes, and I looked back. I could tell that his eyes were currently in control of our conversation. I tensed. "But wouldn't it feel good," he began slowly, "...to experience those days on the battlefield again?"
I froze. I was incredulous, but it didn't matter. I suddenly recalled the days during the war. Hundreds were slaughtered, and hundred were killed--by me. I could never forget the victory we won over at the West Gate, and that day when I was promoted to Sergeant. It was worth it, despite all the deaths, I was prideful. My hand twitches just thinking about it, wanting to grab hold onto a gun and hold another victory. So I said nothing, and Eyepatch just smirks at me and shuts the black case. He turns around to walk away.
"Name's Worick, by the way." He says as he leaves. He threw something at me and I caught it. It was a business card. "Call me if you change your mind." He waves. "You're always welcome." He disappeared out of the alley, along with his partner.
For some reason, my heart is still pounding. What is this feeling?
