Goodbye

As he loaded up his car, Cara watched from
Inside the living room trying and fighting hard to hold back more tears. She hated him. She hated how suave he could be without really trying. She hated how clumsy he is. She hated his charisma. She hated his voice. She hated his hand on her cheek and his lips on hers. She hated all of his compliments and the way he made her feel. She hated his attitude and outlook, always so positive. Most of all though, She hated that she kept telling herself that she hated all of this... But she did, didn't  she? I mean she said it herself; she doesn't love him.
He shut the trunk at long last and proceeded the envious climb back up the driveway. He thought how hard it is to always so goodbye. That's why he doesn't. He never does. He avoids the word like the plague. Instead he says things like "see you soon" or see you later" or "I'll be back soon as you know it" but never ever "goodbye." Cara wiped her eyes and headed headed to meet her husband at the door. She opened it and stepped out only to be swept off her feet by him and twirled around and tilted down in a very tango-esque sort of way. She even expected him to appear with a rose in his mouth for a split second. As he dipped her he gave her one long and passionately provided kiss on the lips. As he pulled away she found herself reeling to get another but she actually stopped herself. She didn't want another one. She never even wanted a first one. She didn't love those kisses anymore. Instead she pulled up and Unwrinkled her sundress to give him one last hug. As he pulled her closer she heard him whisper in her ear "I love you" she paused for what seemed like a lifetime until she scooted up on her tip toes to reach his ear and whisper "goodbye..." She didn't return his gesture. She didn't return his words. For the first time
Ever she felt the twig that replaced her heart snap in two... What had she done? She said goodbye. As they both parted away he looked her deep in her eyes and she could swear to herself that she saw a tear, a glimmer of something, he knew
Something, he had to but just as soon as that feeling came over her it passed in seconds as he just smiled and shook his head up and down curtly and slowly and went to step off the porch. "Goodbye" he thought to himself. She used the word. Cara watched as he got into his car and back away slowly until he was put on their street and until his rear lights at last disappeared out of sight and all the while she could feel her eyes welling up, she could feel the water like a tap that won't shut off... She felt the tears rush and flow and all she thought to herself was:
what... What have I done.
