Three days after the full moon Sadiq was back and walking through the forest with only a slight limp. Silver was never a good thing to get shot with because the wounds always healed really slowly. The moon seemed to be resting at about a third of the way through the sky and was waxing toward a quarter moon from a gibbous.
The air was cool and the forest kept its dull grey colour for the most part of Sadiq's journey. He was usually late to pack meets and the Alpha would bite his head off about it – not that he cared of course. Once he reached the ridge that looked over the town, he could definitely smell that the others were already there or nearby.
The Alpha was there, so was the Beta and the other three Omegas. Sadiq couldn't be bothered to tune into their conversation until he approached the meeting point and the Alpha called out his name. The meeting point was a small ancient court yard near the top of the tallest mountain in the town area (which wasn't even a very tall mountain). It was round with four crumbling slate stone pillars and in front of each pillar was either a new moon, a first quarter, a full moon or a third quarter faded carving in the stone floor. In the middle was a darker and cracked circle with an unrecognisable carving and runes surrounding it.
"Late again, Sadiq," the Alpha tutted, breaking away from his conversation with the others.
"Nice to see you too, Vlad," Sadiq replied dryly. "I can't help but be late because a) you decided to make the meeting place here of all places so I have to walk for ages to get here and b) if you didn't know, I got shot in the leg so it look me a little longer than usual to get here."
"Yeah, we all know that your dumb ass got shot by that Elizaveta psycho and to stumbled into that big tree with glasses' shop. You fucked up Sadiq, you fucked up real bad," Natalya scolded harshly from the other side of the circle where she sat practically on top of her brother. She crossed her arms and scowled harshly with her sapphire coloured eyes. She had light ash coloured hair that was held back by a bow and pale skin like her brother.
Sadiq could only scowl at her remarks. He didn't like most of his pack members and would prefer to be more of a lone wolf, but here in the town, being a lone wolf was not an option, especially since one of the hunters, Heracles, was very determined to have his head mounted on a wall.
"Nat, quit busting his balls just because he's actually got a reputation, unlike you," Mei intervened from her little nook in the court yard where she could rest against one of the pillars.
"Moving on!" Vladimir urged, flashing his sharp teeth to silence the group. "Sadiq," he began, narrowing his burning crimson eyes on Sadiq. "You were responsible for Kim, am I correct?"
"No," Sadiq hissed. "I'm not responsible for anyone. I'm not a baby sitter. I thought Nat was supposed to look out for him."
"Don't pin this on me," Natalya growled, shooting up and stamping her foot on the ground. "He's your responsibility."
"Wasn't he Ivan's responsibility?" Mei wondered out loud.
"I thought he was everyone's responsibility," a soft voice from behind the furthest pillar in the courtyard contemplated.
"Toris, now is not the time for your Utopia dreaming shit," Vladimir sighed. Everyone knew Toris was there sitting behind the pillar with his back to the pack. He never spoke much, but when he did, it was usually about team work or trying to take one from the team. He only turned up to the meetings because Ivan would rip his head off if he didn't – and he wasn't joking about that at all.
"Net," (No) Ivan began sweetly, scrunching his deep violet eyes up. "I think he was my responsibility."
"Well, Ivan. You screwed up. But because you're the Beta, these things can be forgiven," Vladimir lectured, leering at the others.
"I managed to make up for what we lost on the moon and bit some kid who was out by himself in the forest. Nenorocit prost kid," Vlad remarked, folding his arms victoriously. "We'll find out who it was when the new moon comes, so keep an eye out for a clueless little white wolf. Bring him to me," he instructed. "Anyone else manage to make a bite?"
"No," the three omegas chorused emotionlessly, Toris remaining silent as usual.
"I'm disappointed. Not even a hunter," Vladimir tutted. "I expect at least one bite next moon. Dismissed," he huffed, stepping down from the stone ledge, not even casting a second glance to the others. "Toris, come back with a bite or you're dead," he concluded before disappearing into the forest.
Toris' stomach lurched at the threat and he scampered to his feet, hoping to be able to chase after him to change his mind. He was strongly against causing another person to suffer the same fate as him and the other werewolves.
"Don't bother, he's already gone," Mei mumbled sadly, getting up from her spot and walking past Toris, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder as she left.
"Toris, just do it. It's much better than just being dead," Sadiq suggested tiredly, taking a seat on the small wall that surrounded the courtyard.
"I'll be watching you, Toris. Come back with one, da?" Ivan smiled sweetly as he left with Natalya trailing silently behind him. Once Sadiq and Toris were alone, Toris sat down on the ground in front of Sadiq, who looked very tired and worn out.
"How's you leg?" Toris asked softly.
"It's fine. Tell Feliks that I said thank you. I don't think I got the opportunity to when I saw him," Sadiq confessed.
"I will. You're lucky he was at work that night," Toris informed, nodding his head slightly.
"How come? He's always in on the nights of the moon."
"He got sick a few days before, but had only just recovered enough to work the night shift. He's at home sick now."
"Well you take good care of him. I'll help you out with the biting thing," Sadiq offered. Toris perked up at the mention with olive green eyes tinged purple and glistening with hope.
"Would you?" He exclaimed.
"Yeah, I'll just help you with the biting part and say it was you. We kind of need you here, especially for Feliks. Vlad isn't thinking straight," Sadiq said, slowly getting up, hinting that he was going to leave soon.
"Thanks. Just..." Toris hesitated. "Don't rip anyone apart." He gripped Sadiq's bicep to stop him from leaving, looking him dead in the eyes.
"I'll try not to," Sadiq replied light heartedly. That was as nice as he was going to get. He turned away from Toris, strolling back into the cover of the forest, leaving Toris standing alone and deserted in the cold, dark courtyard.
Yes, it was a terrible idea to lie to the Alpha, but it was better than losing the only doctor that all of the werewolves could go to for help. There weren't any other options. Now all that was left was to completely change some unfortunate soul's path. Who would it be? The new moon would decide.
