Over the weekend, Matthew and Francis worked on repainting the house. It was usually a time where the two would talk endlessly about things, but this time it was silent. There was something ominous hanging in the air that silenced the two. Matthew desperately wanted to talk about it to clear the air, but he couldn't work up the courage to start on such a fragile topic.
Even though he was completely exhausted, Matthew lay awake for hours and hours every night, unable to sleep. Kaelin hadn't visited once the entire weekend, which was a little unusual and just made Matthew feel a whole lot more unsettled than he already was.
Monday soon came around bringing some comfort to Matthew. He met Kaelin at school as per usual. Apparently he was really busy that weekend and also had to deal with his brother Jett being an obnoxious, naïve dick head on Sunday, so he didn't visit. He didn't elaborate on what was up with Jett, and Matthew didn't want to ask. Jett was pretty notorious for rushing into things head first and ending up in deep shit, sometimes even dragging Kaelin in with him.
"Rumour has it, that Emil was just skipping school and doing LSD so that's why he disappeared," Kaelin said with a slight smirk as he and Matthew stopped by their lockers. "But they found him," he continued.
"Yeah, he's right over there," Matthew agreed, pointing to where Emil was standing further down the corridor. He looked ridiculously tired and incredibly flinchy. His eyes were trained on the ground and he seemed to be leaning on the wall for support. "I didn't take him as much of an LSD sort of person," he remarked shyly.
"Yeah, I thought that he would be more of a shrooms or amphetamine sort of kid," Kaelin summed up, glancing at Emil. "God, he looks absolutely wrecked."
"Do you think he's alright?" Matthew wondered, closing his locker, observing Emil sharply. Suddenly, a certain scent came to Matthew's attention, causing him to freeze on the spot. It was so familiar, yet terrifyingly different. There was another werewolf around, and not just one of the other wolves in town, no, this was a new scent. Matthew found himself instinctively sniffing in an attempt to catch onto the scent.
"Mattie, that the hell are you doing?" Kaelin interrupted, snapping Matthew back to the more important side of reality.
"Nothing, just got a sniffly nose that's all," he lied, rubbing his nose, pretending that it was runny. "Let's just go to class shall we?"
"Yeah, okay," Kaelin agreed hesitantly, turning away and walking down the corridor away from Emil. There must have been a new werewolf, someone at the school must have been bitten on the full moon, Matthew concluded. He just needed to find out who.
Unfortunately, today Matthew shared all of his classes with Kaelin, so he couldn't risk getting caught sniffing someone out because humans thought that it as oh so creepy. Not only was the scent in the corridor, but it was in a few of his classes. It must have been someone in his year level and someone he had biology, history and math with.
Somehow, he managed to keep a mental list of all the people he shared those classes with and was able to narrow it down to a couple of people. Not knowing who it was was driving Matthew to the absolute edge so badly that when Kaelin tapped him on the shoulder when he was concentrating very intensely, he accidentally screamed and fell out of his chair. Luckily only two other people noticed.
"Mattie, are you sure you're okay?" Kaelin asked concernedly. "You seem a little off today... And jumpy."
"Yeah, I'm fine. Just worried." The same question. The same lie.
"What are you worried about?"
"Just school work." So many lies.
"I can help you if you want. I can come over after school and we can work together," Kaelin suggested.
