"Lily." Remus found her as the Head Girl made her way to the prefects carriage.
"Remus, hi." She greeted cheerfully, turning around to face her friend. Lily gave him a quick hug and an apologetic look as she pulled back. "I can't believe they didn't make you Head Boy. We would have been the dream team! Now I bet I'm stuck with some cocky Slytherin that I barely even-"
"Lily." He stopped her gently. She blinked at him.
"That's what I wanted to talk to you about. I know who the Head Boy is, but you're not going to like it. At all." But he didn't need to say it. She immediately knew who it was. James Potter. Before she could even react, though, they were interrupted.
"Hello there Moony. Partner in crime." James nodded at Lily and gave Remus a pat on the back. His shiny prefect badge already pinned to his shirt. A huge mischievous grin on his lips.
"I'll be right back." Lily told Remus through a clenched jaw and pushed Potter aside, walking to the back of the train. She never did go back, Lily spent the whole journey to Hogwarts pacing back and forth at the back of the last carriage.
There must have been a mistake. It couldn't possibly have been true. How could Dumbledore, McGonnagal, have let this happen? James Potter did nothing but cause them trouble, and they had decided to reward them? No, that couldn't be.
When the train finally came to a stop in front of the school, Lily found an empty compartment and hurried to put her school uniform on - she'd spent all that time thinking about James and now she was going to be late. The year had already started great.
As Lily climbed down the steps of the train, the cold, wet, air felt quite welcoming; that was until, of course, she'd slipped on the last step and almost fell to the ground. She would have actually fell, had it not been for James Potter, who quickly took hold of her arm and steadied her on the floor.
"Easy there." He'd spoken in a low voice, but she could hear the smirk in his voice. "I know I'm good looking, but there's no need to pass out." He laughed quietly. Lily rolled her eyes.
That would definitely be a long year.
