As soon as she stopped hearing Snape's footsteps, Lily dropped her bag to the floor and covered her face with her hands, unable to stop the tears from rolling down her face. As she did so, though, Lily noticed someone standing next to the classroom's door and dropped her hands.

"How long have you been standing there?" She sniffed, looking over at James with red eyes.

He shrugged. "A while. I didn't want to interrupt, but I didn't want to leave you alone with that asshole either." He walked closer to her, "Are you okay?" His hand twitched. He wanted to reach out and touch her, but he wouldn't, he didn't want to touch her first after what had happened.

Lily nodded, but then stopped herself and shook her head. "I'm fine with what happened." She sniffed again and wiped her cheeks with her cloak's sleeve, "But I'm mourning our friendship." She let out a choked sob, and that was it for James. Without giving himself time to think about it, he reached out and tugged at her sleeve tentatively, pulling her towards him. Lily let him and stepped forward completely, allowing James to wrap his arms around her and herself to cry more.

James placed his hand on her head gently, pulling her close, holding her close and stroking her hair gently. They stood there for maybe a minute or two before James kissed the top of her head and pulled back softly.

"Come on," He held his hand out for her after picking up her bag. Lily blinked at him, "You can't go to class like this, everyone will want to know what happened. C'mon," He sighed patiently when she hesitated, "I promise I won't touch you." He insisted, dropping his hand to his side. Lily nodded once and followed James, wrapping her arms around herself.

James led her outside and through the quidditch pitch, up the stands. He sat down on the bench and she sat so her leg was barely touching his, closer than he would have sat next to her. She played with her own fingers on her lap and sniffed, unable to stop her eyes from sending tears rolling down her cheeks.

James pulled his glasses off of his face and tried to clean them up with his shirt. He was fidgeting, Lily could tell.

"I'm sorry it had to go down like this." He looked over at her. She shrugged.

"I'm not. I just-" She looked at him, too. "I just wish he'd said it earlier, so I wouldn't have wasted all this time thinking he was actually my friend."

James pressed his lips together. "I know that I've sort of been trying to annoy you since we met, but I am. Your friend, I mean. And so is Remus, he's friends with everyone. And Sirius, you're probably his only friend that is a girl that he hasn't at least kissed." He let out a dry chuckle. "Of course, I'd kill him if he ever tried, but that's beside the point." He looked away, but soon his eyes fell on hers again. "I know it's not much, but I guarantee they're the best friends you could ask for."

Lily smiled sadly and reached out to place her hand on top of his. "I know you are, James."

I'm going to cut it short here. Next chapter will still be Lily and James talking, but it gets somewhat juicy! Oooohhhh!!
