Saved
The playground at Shohwan Elementary was occupied by children running about, chasing one another and shouting "Tag, you're it!" It had been recess which meant freedom for the little monsters.
As the kids played with their friends, the teachers were all too busy interacting with one another and paid no attention to the little girl getting picked on. She was located under the cherry blossom tree, surrounded by two boys who would simply not leave her alone.
They always bothered her because she was Chinese, unlike most of the students there and today was just like any other day. "Give me your lunch!" The taller boy hissed, snatching up her food.
"But I'm hungry." The little girl cried out as she attempted to retrieve her lunch box. However, the other boy shoved her back onto the ground. She fell with a loud thud as her head smashed back against the bark of the tree.
The little girl yelped and when she moved her hand to rub the sore spot, she discovered blood. Her eyes widened as her hands began to tremble. "You—you made me bleed! I'm telling the teacher!" She screamed.
But before she could march over to the adults, the older boy cupped her mouth and dragged her away from sight. She tried to scream for help but his hand muffled out her cries. She twisted and turned, attempting to free herself but she was no match for them.
At last they released her, throwing her roughly onto the dirt field. Her hair was disheveled and her uniform smeared with sand. "Go back to your country! We don't like girls like you!" One barked at her as he kicked dirt into her face.
The little girl shielded her eyes with one hand while the other was still comforting her head-wound.
"I was born here!" She snapped back. "When my mom and dad finds out, you're both going to be in big trouble."
"Well then, we'll just have to make it so you can't talk!" And when one boy raised his fist, someone had caught his hand.
"Why are you guys picking on a cute little girl? That's not very gentlemanlike, apologize." The boy ordered.
At this point the little girl didn't dare meet eyes with any of them. "Sorry, Miyoon." They both stated in unison with a slight bow before scurrying off. Miyoon stood up with her wobbling legs. She wiped away the tears that had fallen and when she took a step forward, it was a blur.
She could see a boy talking to her, patting her cheek, asking if she was okay and his actions caused her to smile. She quickly glanced at his name tag which read Kim Myungsoo before passing out.
And no one expected the kind of effect that name was going to have on Miyoon for the next ten years of her life.
