Gabe ended up taking Klara and I out to lunch shortly after leaving the airport. Booking an early flight was a great idea only because I get to spend some quality time with my siblings and start to become familiar with Colorado. Anyways, the moving truck wouldn't be in state until later tonight.
For lunch, Gabe took us to a restaurant called Maggiano's, an Italian restaurant on the outskirts of Denver in a suburb called Englewood. My stomach started to growl once all three of us sat down at a table. I didn't realize how hungry I was going to be and I didn't even eat breakfast this morning.
Inside the restaurant was pretty nice. A lot of people sit at tables for two, four or tables pushed together to accompany a big party of people. And those people there before us were dressed pretty nicely compared to our casual clothing we wore. I thought Gabe was going to stick out more than us like a sore thumb since he's probably popular here. No one really noticed, just a lot of people gave us looks.
"I think it's rude that you're wearing that beanie," Klara said to Gabe as she picked at the piece of break she picked up from the plate in the middle of the table. The waiter placed the plate of bread down moments ago and no one touched it until now.
"I don't want people noticing the Colorado Avalanche captain here. I just want to spend some quality time with my sisters that I haven't seen in so long. Why ruin a great lunch time?"
"He has a point," I said in response to what my brother told Klara. And she ended up giving me a slight glare and snorted as she continued to eat her piece of bread. Her reaction only lead up to me snickering quietly.
The rest of our lunch time spent together was little small talk here and there. I think all three of us were too focused on eating because Gabe, Klara and myself finished up all of our food. We even ordered a large amount of food on our plates as well.
I was too busy slightly leaning over the table as I was slowly sipping on my sprite and chewing on the straw. Klara and Gabe were having a conversation between each other as I was in my own little world. My brother looked at me and all I saw was his lips move a bit since I wasn't even paying attention or listening to anything.
"Huh?" I mumbled as I stopped biting down on the straw to figure out what Gabe was saying.
"Damn, still typical Freya," he snorted and grinned. Right back at him, I rolled my eyes. Still typical Gabe, I thought and mentally smirked to myself.
"Okay, what were you saying?"
Gabe just stared at me for awhile and I started to get flustered because I thought he was giving me the silent treatment for no good reason. But before I could open my mouth and call him out, he finally spoke, saying: "You like surprises?"
I totally forgot about his surprise.
It's a no brainer. I love surprises that come from Gabe, especially when he surprises Klara and me. He's not the type of brother to surprise his siblings just to prank them or anything, It's all out of family love. I'm pretty sure since now he's basically rich and can buy whatever, the surprise is surely going to be expensive.
Expensive as our lunch was; the first expensive stuff Klara nad I have encountered so far in Colorado. We can't also forget Gabe's fancy little Range Rover car either.
Right after lunch, Gabe was such in a good mood and it was creeping me out. Klara looked over at me as we walked out of the restaurant and raised and eyebrow and nodded towards him. All I could do is shrug in return.
Gabe opened the passenger side door of his car and pulled out tow burgundy colored bandanas and handed one to Klara and the other to me. "It won't be a surprise if you see it beforehand."
"Stop teasing us and let's go," I said as I got into the back of the car. Once I was all buckled up into the seat, I finally wrapped up my bandana around my eyes and tied it off in the back. It was a little see through, but not too much to where I could actually see.
With not being able to see anything, it felt like the drive was taking hours instead of minutes. It was hard to judge how long it's been since we all left the restaurant. Gabe had the radio playing softly, but I couldn't hear the music too well. No music, no telling on how long we've been driving. It's so easy to judge drive time by estimating the length of the song playing.
The car finally came to a stop, parking and all. The engine turned off entirely and I heard Gabe open the driver's side door to get out of the car. He then proceeded to open up the door on my side and helped me out of the car since I still cannot see. I thought the thin material that made up my plain dark grey Nike sweatshirt wasn't going to hold up well with the cold in Colorado. It's not as bad as I thought, Grand Forks is a lot colder than this.
"I feel like I should be nervous about what's going to happen." I ended up jumping by surprise when I heard Klara speak. I didn't even know she was now standing to the left of me.
"You two can go ahead and take your blindfolds off now."
A smile crept onto my face as I started to unfasten the knot on the back of the bandana around my head. I didn't bother to even keep a hold of it in my hand, it fell to the ground immediately as the knot came undone completely.
Two brand new cars. A fairly nice apartment complex. It was all I was taking in in front of me.
"The cars?" Klara asked, still in awe like me. "You got us brand new cars? And found us a place to live now?"
"You two are my baby sisters. And also, I wanted to make the transition a little easier for you guys," he shrugged a bit and smiled. Gabe ended up handing us both a set of keys to one of the cars in front of us. I looked down in my hand to see the Subaru logo on the back engraved into the black plastic. Klara ended up getting the BMW 7, but my brother knows m e well enough that I always wanted a Subaru and drive my own. My own Subaru Legacy. And Klara... She dreamed big and finally gets her fancy car.
"We can test drive the cars later, I want to go and look at our new place!" Without any further notice, Klara grabbed a hold of my arm and pulled me along into the building. This feels a lot like deja vu from earlier in the airport; as again, my sister grabbing a hold of my arm.
Gabe must've gave her the keys to the apartment while I was too busy admiring my new car. Klara seemed like she knew where she was going: no hesitation at all from her.
Finally, she lets go of my arm as she came to a stop in front of a door labeled "809". My sister was so anxious and excited that she went on ahead and opened up the door, taking me inside with her. Did Klara not want to wait for Gabe? Where is he anyways?
I don't even remember seeing him following behind the two of us, desperately trying to catch up as it was a mad dash into the building and up the stairs. I took a mental note on the elevator we passed by in the lobby, too.
"This is so much better than our last place!" Klara squealed out, making me snap out of my thoughts. She wasn't wrong. The interior looked so much better than our last apartment. I even took noticed of the black metal spiral staircase in the corner, right by the built in fireplace in the living room. This is a two level apartment we now own. And before I knew it, Klara was already making her way to those stairs to check out the upper level.
Now I was alone. I didn't bother to follow my sister and decided to take a seat at one of the built in bar stools at the bar counter in the kitchen. All of the counter tops were white marble black wood stained cabinets along with stainless steel appliances. But before my eyes could wander any more, I took notice of a small piece of paper on counter. Looking over it, I immediately recognized Gabe's handwriting scribbled all over the paper. And it read:
Here's another treat on me on your guys' arrival to Colorado. Hope to see you both at the NYE hockey game. Hockey tickets are on me.
-Gabe
