I stand in our plain hallway, struggling to put my hair up into a Abnegation bun in front of the mirror which my faction indicates I should only use once a month. However, today my hair refuses to cooperate, so I put it in one simple braid down the back of my head instead. Here in Abnegation, extravagance is considered self indulgent and unnecessary, which is why I have been wearing plain grey clothes and simple hairstyles for all fourteen years of my life. However, that could all change soon, because today I, as well as all other fourteen year olds in our city, will be taking the aptitude test, and the outcome could determine our loyalties forever. It used to be taken at sixteen years, but the Erudite decided to lower it to fourteen.

I jump as my father, Marcus Eaton, enters my small bedroom and sits on the side of my bed. I didn't hear his footsteps in the hallway, but his every move makes me jump these days.
"As soon as you enter the simulation, you'll be offered a knife or a slab of meat." My father explains. "Choose the meat. Then, a dog will come up behind you, so throw the meat to it. That will rule out Dauntless and Erudite. A small girl will run towards the dog, and the dog will turn to attack. Throw yourself in the path of the dog to prove your Abnegation instincts. It's only a simulation, so don't worry about getting hurt." I zone out at this point, not caring what he says even though I know that if I don't do everything correctly, I will be sleeping on my stomach for another week, from the stripes he carves into my back.
"Understand???" He says.
"Yes,sir." I reply, even though I wasn't really listening to anything he just said.
"Good. " he replies " If they ask you if you were aware during the simulation, say no. Under any circumstances."
"Yes, sir." I reply, wishing he would go away and leave me in peace. As if he knows this, he turns around to leave, but something catches his eye. He storms towards me, and I move backwards, afraid that his fists will mark my body, staining it varying shades of purple and blue. He reaches for my neck, and I brace myself for the pain, but it doesn't come as I expect. He pulls at the necklace that I have kept hidden from him for many years; it was the last gift my mother gave me before she passed away.
"WHAT IS THIS?!" He yells, loud, but not loud enough for the neighbours to hear.
"Umm...it's.....it's...mum's" I stammer, shaking in fear of what he will do to me.
"It is full of self indulgence! I will not have this in my house!"
He pulls on the necklace, hard, so that it snaps in two, and then throws it on the floor behind him. To him, he has taken away a vain possession that i had no right to have. To me, he has ripped up the only memory I have of Mum, the one thing that held me together. Approaching me, he makes his hands into fists, and lunges.
"Stop!" I yell. "The choosing ceremony tomorrow. Everyone will see the bruises!"
He usually doesn't let me attend social events or gatherings, claiming that I'll ruin his reputation as council leader, but this one is compulsory.
"Wait here." His voice is cruel, harsh, like the one that haunts my night mares. He returns, only this time with a belt in his hands. Without being told, I turn over and pull my top up, so that my back is exposed. This happens at least once a week now, for something or other, so I should be used to the feeling. But I'm not.
The pain hits me like a brick wall, knocking all the breath out of me. It comes again and again, until black spots appear at the edge of my vision. I end up collapsing, only one thought in my mind.
I have to escape
