Marcus slams the door shut, and locks it. He makes his way to the table, and sits on one of our plain wood chairs.
"Sit." He says, gesturing to the seat opposite him. I do, and we sit in silence for a few moments.
"What was your result?" He asks, and I know I can't refuse to tell him.
"A...A...Abnegation." I mutter, avoiding his eyes. I can feel them boring into the top of my head, looking into my thoughts. He knows I am lying.
"Look at me when you talk to me!" He shouts, and lifts my head up roughly. "I did not raise you to be a liar! What was your result?"
"Abnegation." I say, bolder this time.
"And..."
"AND WHAT?" He rages."My r..result was Abnegation....
and Amity, and Dauntless."I can see the anger in his face, and I can see his attempt to conceal it.
"What are you going to choose tomorrow?"
I pause. I know that if I choose Abnegation, I will never get away from him. And I know that if I choose another faction, then I would probably not fit in.
"We both know what you're going to choose, and we both know what will happen if you don't choose the right faction." Marcus goes on.
"Yes, sir." I reply, glad I didn't have to say anything.
"Oh, and by the way, my friend from the council is coming over tonight, so you should be on your best behaviour. Take his coat, serve him food, and otherwise just stand in a corner or something, keeping out the way. You should eat dinner early, as well."
"Yes, I understand sir." I reply. I hate nights like this, but we have to seem like as normal family as possible.
The first council member arrives at 6:02pm. I can tell from the clock on the mantelpiece, which I have been staring at for the past half an hour.
"Andrew! Come in." Father invites the first council member in.
"Hello, Marcus." He replies. "How are you?"
They exchange polite conversation, and I rack my brain to try and remember where I have seen him before. I think it was walking down the pavement a few years ago with his perfect Abnegation family, nodding their heads at friends and acquaintances."Can I take your coat?" I offer Andrew.
"No thank you, it's okay. " he replies.
"Please let me, I insist."
He hands me his coat, and I hang it up carefully on the rack on the hallway.
"You must be...Evelyn?" He asks, trying to make conversation. I would love to have this man as my father, I've only known him a few moments and he's already been nicer to me than father is in a day.
"Yes." I say. "Pleased to meet you."
"Shall we sit down?" Father suggests, obviously wanting to change the subject from me to something else.
"Yes please!" Andrew says. "It's been a hard day at work."
We head into the lounge, were Marcus and Andrew sit down on the only two seats available.
"Can I get you something to drink?" I offer them"That would be lovely." Andrew smiles at me pleasantly.
"Father?" I ask. "Would you like a drink?"
"Yes please, if you don't mind." He says.
That has been the only time he's been polite to me in ages.I head into the kitchen, and get two glasses of water, since it the only thing the Abnegation drink.
"Here you are. " I set the drinks down on the bare coffee table in the lounge.
"Thank you very much." Andrew says."It's my pleasure, sir." I reply. "Please may I be excused from your presence?" I ask father, desperate to get away. I can tell that he doesn't want me to leave, but he wants to impress Andrew more by showing off his "perfect family."
"Of course, darling." He replies. I walk up the stairs, and into my bedroom at the top of the staircase. I wish that everyday could be like that, with him showing me affection and love, but without that part of him underneath that is ready to hurt me if I am not polite enough. I lie down on my bed, and fall asleep worrying about the Choosing Ceremony tomorrow.
