Chapter 1: Getting to Know Me

*Charlotte's POV*

I groan as I hear my child screaming and crying in the next room over. I quickly rolled out of my bed to see why she's awake at this hour, 4 in the morning to be exact.

"Riley, baby, why are you crying? Huh? Do you want Momma to feed you?" I giggle as I pull her out of her crib and cradle her. I walk over to the rocking chair after I get a bottle warmed and start feeding her. I do this almost every night and I always think about the exact same thing. Being a teen Mom. I know I'm only 18 and I know that I should've waited, but in all honesty, Riley is the best thing that's ever happened to me. I don't regret having her. I wouldn't change it for the world. She's 6 months old and my life has completely changed, for the better. Most of the time, when people find out that I have a kid, they apologize and judge me. But they don't see the good. And like I said before, I wouldn't change a thing. She's made my life better.

I snap out of my thoughts, like always, and look down at her. She's fallen asleep by now and I put her back into her crib. As I get back into bed I look at the handsome man sleeping beside me. The father of my child. My first love. An amazing guy named Zach. I smile and snuggle into him as I slowly fall back asleep.

"CHARLIE, GET UP HERE, NOW!" Zach yelled from upstairs. I don't know why but he's always called me Charlie. It's weird, but oh well. I lay Riley down in her rocker and head upstairs, kind of dreading it. I knew what was coming, but I had to face him. When Zach got mad, he was scary and would always get physical at the drop of a hat. I sigh and walk up to our room. "What is it babe?" I ask quite sweetly. Of course he started screaming at me, for something that wasn't even true and left a few red and purple marks on my face and body. Before he finally left for a 16 hour shift at work, he gave Riley a kiss and said he loved me. And as always, I said 'I love you too.' I never believe him when he says he loves me because the only time he says it, is after he's hurt me. When he found out I was pregnant, he gave me many bruises and cuts and then said he loved me. That was the first time he hit me and the first time he said 'I love you.'

The reason I haven't left? He takes care of me and Riley. He provides us with food, a home, health insurance etc. I stay because of Riley. She doesn't have Zach's last name, which makes it easier if I leave him.

My parents didn't want me living at home with a baby so I was forced to move out and Zach was the best choice. I haven't told my parents about what really goes on between us but what they don't know, won't hurt them. I also have an older brother, his name is Drew. He's going to college to become a doctor and is 24 years old. But ever since I had Riley we don't talk much. He's busy with school and I'm obviously busy with my life.

I do quite a lot of thinking. I think about everything over and over again.

"Okay, time for a bath Riley!" I say as I pick her up and head upstairs.

After she's bathed and ready and I, covered up, we hop in my car and drive to the doctor's office. She has to get shots and I need a check up. Oh joy. On the way, I stop at Starbucks to see my best friend, Lillian. She's the person, besides Riley, keeping me going.

"Char! You look so good I feel like I haven't seen you in forever!" Lillian exclaimed. "Oh Lil, don't be such a drama queen. And I can't talk long, we gotta hit the road as soon as I get my drink. Doctors appointment." I make a face at the last part.
