Hermione's POV

'He called me Mudblood! He actually called me Mudblood! He doesn't care!' Those thoughts ran through my mind, bringing tears to my eyes. Everyone else was down at dinner, so I had the common room to myself. After the incident with Dra-Malfoy, I caught myself, Harry and Ron comforted me after they stopped roaring with laughter. Ok, it was pretty funny when I slapped him across the face, but after a couple minutes, they didn't mention it again.

'They don't care.' A voice in my head said.

"Yes, they do." I muttered.

'No.'

"Yes."

'NO!'

"Yes! They do care!" I screamed, letting the hot tears I've been holding back flow down my face, burning my cheeks. What if the voice was right? I knew I had to do something to prove it wrong, to prove that they did care about me. I grabbed a spare piece of parchment and wrote a note to Harry, Ron, and Ginny explaining what I was about to do and left it on Ginny's bed. I grabbed my warmest jacket, my dark blue and brown fuzzy one, and the only scarf I could find, my dark green and brown one. I put them on as snugly as possible and slipped on my chocolate brown Uggs on my feet. I stood up and the jacket swallowed my figure. Ah, well, at least it'll keep me warm. I set off down the halls after leaving the Gryffindor common room, straight towards the front doors. When I reached the oak front doors, I pulled hard but they wouldn't budge, so I muttered spells under my breath until the lock clicked. I tugged at them and they opened silently, with a burst of ice cold air. I shivered as the icy wind blew against my skin. I tucked my head down and continued fighting against the roaring wind to get to the Black Lake. I reached the lake just as the sun was starting to set. It cast a rather beautiful glow on the snowy grounds, a perfect sight to see. I slipped the ponytail out of my frizzy, curly hair. Okay, it was less frizzy and more curly, but anyways. Ice was covering the Black Lake, and it freezing even more with every second. Thoughts of my parents, of Harry, Ron, and Ginny came. Thoughts of him--of Draco. As soon as his name ran thought my mind, tears poured down my face, only making it to my cheeks before freezing. I stripped my jacket and scarf off and threw them on the ground. I pulled out my wand and burnt a hole in the ice. I looked into the lake's murky water and tossed my wand on top of my jacket and scarf and took a deep breath. I shut my eyes tight and plunged into the lake.

Draco's POV

I felt the cold, icy wind bite at any of my exposed as I walked around the frozen Black Lake. I had left dinner early because I wasn't hungry, and to avoid Pansy. Come to think of it, I hadn't seen Granger since, well, since I called her that name. I hadn't meant to call her that, it just slipped out. As I thought about this afternoon, I leaned back against a tree, and saw her in my mind, her hurt face. The spot where she smacked me tingled and burned. She did have a hard slap. As I casually leaned against the frozen tree next to the lake, I see a head of wet, curly brown locks pop up through a hole in the ice, barely visible through the flurry of ice and snow.

"Granger." I smile to myself, "Absolutely crazy." I watched as she started to pull herself out of the water. I shook my head laughing, when I heard a terrible, ear piercing scream across the way. I whipped my head up to Herm-Granger, I corrected myself, disappearing beneath the ice, one of the Giant Squid's tentacles wrapped around her waist. My eyes widened as I ran towards the spot where she had vanished beneath the ice. I couldn't see her through the ice, nor through the murky black water. I moved without thinking, stripping layers of clothing off and grabbing my wand. Wand in hand, I cast the bubble head charm, closed my eyes and dove in after Granger.
